A new study has claimed that the natural extract derived from the neem tree, commonly found in India, could potentially be used to treat pancreatic cancer without harming normal, healthy cells. The study was conducted by the researchers from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso). The findings were published in the journal Scientific Reports.
Neem : Miraculous drug for pancreatic cancer
Scientists tested nimbolide, a compound found in neem leaves, against pancreatic cancer in cell lines and mice. Scientists tested nimbolide, a compound found in neem leaves, against pancreatic cancer in cell lines and mice. The results showed that nimbolide can stop pancreatic cancer's growth and metastasis without harming normal, healthy cells.
During the study it was observed that nimbolide was able to reduce the migration and invasion capabilities of pancreatic cancer cells by 70 per cent which means that cancerous cells did not become aggressive and spread. It should be noted that in humans, this migration and invasion-or metastasis-of pancreatic cancer to other regions of the body is the chief cause of mortality. Nimbolide treatments also induced cancer cell death, causing the size and number of pancreatic cancer cell colonies to drop by 80 per cent.
Pancreatic cancer : Pancreatic cancer arises when cells in the pancreas, a glandular organ behind the stomach, begin to multiply out of control and form a mass. It has the highest mortality rate among the all other forms of cancers.Around 94 per cent of patients suffering from it die within five years of diagnosis.
Medicinal values of Neem tree : Azadirachta indica which is commonly known as Neem, is a tree in the mahogany family Meliaceae. It is native to India and the Indian subcontinent including Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Products made from neem trees have been used in India for over two millennia for their medicinal properties. Neem products are believed by Siddha and Ayurvedic practitioners to be antihelmenthic, antifungal, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiviral, contraceptive and sedative. Neem oil contains fatty acid and vitamin E and is used for healthy hair, to improve liver function, detoxify the blood, and balance blood sugar levels
