  • Rajya Sabha passes Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010 amending the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 and the Special Marriages Act, 1954.

    The bill aims to amend marriage laws to provide for "irretrievable breakdown of marriage as a ground for divorce" as well as granting women the right to a share in husband's property.

  • August 29 is observed as National Sports Day in commemoration of Indian hockey wizard Dhyan Chand birth anniversary.

    - President gives National sports Awards ie Khel Ratna, Arjuna award, Dronacharya  and Dhyanchand award,on this day.

    - commemorated to spread awareness about importance of sports and to encourage spirit and culture of sports in India.

  • Government of India has set production targets for crops including foodgrains for the year 2013-14 at 259 million tonnes.
    The crop-wise production targets -: Rice 105 mt ; Wheat 92.50 mt; Pulses 19.00mt; Coarse Cereals 42.50mt
  • Department of Commerce constitutes "Task Force on Currency Swap Arrangements/Agreements"  to explore the possibility of using local currency for trade with major trading partners; pros and cons of it and its posssible role in addressing the issue of rising trade deficit and consequent current account deficit.

    - Additional Secretary, Trade Policy Division, Department of Commerce will chair it

    - Will have representation from RBI, EXIM bank, FICCI,CII ,SBI and other stakeholders

  • Indian Sania Mirza and her new doubles partner Chinese Jie Zheng wins women's doubles trophy at the WTA New Haven Open (Connecticut, US)

    This is her 3rd title of the season (previous 2 were won with American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands) and 17th overall

    They defeated pair of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Katarina Srebotnik 6-3 6-4 in the finals

  • Railway's High Power Committee (Running & Safety), headed by D.P.Tripathi, has submitted its Final report.  

    constituted by the Ministry of Railways to look into pending demands of Labour Federation regarding working hours of Running Staff (Guards and Drivers) and review of Safety Categories staff over Indian Railways.

  • Four more countries- Yemen, Tanzania, Egypt, and El -Salvador, recognises Kosovo as independent Republic/ Country.

    It broke away from Serbia in 2008 and self proclaimed independence.

    Countries like Russia and Serbia are opposing its status as Indpendent Republic.

    Though still not a official UN member country, it is now recognised as a Country by 101 UN member states (not  by India) and some non UN members also (eg Taiwan).

  • Indian Women Archery recurve team - Laishram Bombayla Devi, Rimil Buriuly, Deepika Kumari, wins successive Gold Medal at World Cup Archery Stage 4. - read more cat
  • DRDO has developed Robotic Soldier ‘Daksha’- a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) which is an automated mobile platform for multi-purpose payloads. - read more cat
  • Railways mulling setting Nuclear Power Plant in association with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd., to meet its power requirement.

    Its Peak power requirement at present is 4000 MW.

    Preliminary discussions with NPCIL for exploring the possibility of setting up of 1400 MW plant in Joint Venture with them,held.

    At present Railway is setting up a thermal power plant of 1000 MW capacity in Joint Venture (JV) with NTPC (presently under construction at Nabinagar, Bihar; first unit of 250 MW likely to be commissioned by 2014).

  • India Under- 23 cricket team defeats Pakistan to win Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Emerging trophy Tournament in Singapore.

    Suryakumar Yadav was the captain of the team.
