  • Tokyo wins the race to host the 2020 Olympics beating Istanbul by 60 votes to 36. The third contender Madrid had earlier been eliminated in a first-round ballot itself.  
  • Tony Abbott to be new PM of Australia. His Liberal-National coalition wins 88 seats to ex-PM Kevin Rudd's Labor Party 57 in the 150-seat parliament.
  • G-20 Summit held in St. Petersburg, Russia, overshadowed by the issue of International response to alleged Chemical attacks in Syria. - read more cat
  • Cambodia's election commission declares ruling party 'Cambodian People's Party' (CPP) as the winners of the country's disputed July election. CPP, in power for 28 years, won 68 National Assembly seats to opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) 55.   - read more cat
  • Wrestling back into the Olympic Games for the 2020 and 2024, voting out baseball, softball and squash.  
    It is seen as a result of sweeping reforms Wrestling underwent since being provisionally dropped in February 2013.

  • Maldives Presidential election moves into second round as none gets complete majority of votes.   Former President Mohamed Nasheed (45.45 per cent) and Yaameen Abdulla (25.35 per cent), half-brother to ex-President Maumoon Gayoom, to battle it out.

    A run-off (second round) has been necessitated because no candidate has managed to get the constitutionally-mandated 50 per cent plus-one vote for a first round victory.

  • Romesh Bhandari, former Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Tripura and Goa, dies at 85.

    He had also served as Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi.

  • President gives National Awards to 336 teachers of outstanding merit on Teachers Day.

    - Celebrated on the birthday of the 2nd President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, an eminent scholar.

    - Introduced in 1958, the scheme of National Award to teachers has the objective of enhancing the prestige of teachers and giving public recognition to teachers of outstanding merit.

    - Each award constitutes a certificate of merit, a silver medal and a cash prize of Rs. 25000/-.

  • Indian Railways to install a new fuel saving device called Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in Diesel Locomotives; to save more than 20 lakh per locomotive annually besides less emission of CO2, CO and other pollutants.

    - APU contains a small diesel engine (25HP) coupled to a compressor and alternator for battery charging

    - now main engine (25lt diesel/hr) would shut down if train is idle for more than 10 min (waiting for path or for giving precedence to other trains). Instead APU (3lt/hr) will meet the requirement to provide compressed air for train brake which is supplied by compressor driven by engine and to charge the locomotive battery.
