World's largest international maritime exercise kicks off in Hawaii, California

RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific) 2016, the world's largest international maritime warfare exercise has began in Pacific Ocean at Hawaii, United States. RIMPAC 2016 will see the participation of 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel from 26 countries. 

RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th edition of  biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise that t is hosted and administered by the United States Navy's Pacific Fleet, headquartered at Pearl Harbor, in conjunction with the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, and Hawaii National Guard forces under the control of the Governor of Hawaii.

The US invites military forces from the Pacific Rim and beyond to participate. With RIMPAC the United States Pacific Command seeks to provide a unique training opportunity to participants in order foster cooperative relationships to ensure the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans.

Facts about RIMPAC 2016:

RIMPAC 2016 Theme:  “Capable, Adaptive, Partners”.

Twenty-six nations, 49 ships, six submarines, about 200 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California.

Participating Countries : Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, China, Peru, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States. Three new nations (Denmark, Germany and Italy) are participating for the first time in RIMPAC. 

Chineses participation : Chinese squadron of five ships, the missile destroyer Xian, with the missile frigate Hengshui, supply ship Gaoyouhu, a submarine rescue vessel Changdao, and the hospital ship Peace Ark is participating in the world's largest exercise. Chinese crew of 1,200 officers, soldiers and sailors is the third largest national contingent in the exercises.

Indian Navy’s participation in RIMPAC :

Indian NavyIndian Navy’s association with RIMPAC commenced with participation as an ‘Observer’ in 2006, 2010 and 2012 and it's participation was further  enhanced with deployment of Sahyadri in the 24th edition of the exercise.

This year Indian Naval ship Satpura, an indigenously built guided missile stealth frigate, part of the Eastern Fleet, will participate in the exercise.

RIMPAC 2016 is another significant milestone in Indian Navy’s efforts towards, strengthening mutual confidence as well as sharing of best practices with other navies of the region.

Indian Navy’s participation in the exercise will support maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, and contribute to peace and stability of the global commons.
