Mysuru declared cleanest city of country in Swachh Sarvekshan-2016
Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu announced the top 10 cities which are among the cleanest in the country. Mysuru city from Karnataka has topped the list of 10 cities, while Chandigarh is in the second position and Tiruchirappalli bagged the third position. Dhanbad has been found the dirtiest city by the survey.
Swachh Survekshna, was conducted by Quality Council of India, which deployed 25 teams involving a total of 100 trained surveyors for verification of documents, field observation and obtaining citizen feedback. The survey was conducted in 73 cities with 10 lakh and above population.
The survey was conducted to assess the impact of efforts under Swachh Bharat Mission for solid waste management, construction of toilets, service delivery level, infrastructure developed, men and machines deployed, strategies being followed and overall impact of Swachh Bharat Mission.
Categorization of cities
♦ 15 cities have scored more than 70% of the total marks of 2000 and have been categorized as Leaders.
♦ 20 cities have scored in the range of 60%-70% and have been categorized as Aspiring Leaders
♦ Cities with scores in the range of 50%-60% need to accelerate their efforts.
♦ Cities that have scored below 50% have been named Slow Movers and need to work harder to improve sanitation.
Top 10 cities in the order of merit : Mysore (1st rank), Chandigarh (2nd), Tiruchirappalli (3rd), Delhi (4th), Visakhapatnam (5th), Surat (6th), Rajkot (7th) and Gangtok (8th), Pimpri-Chinchwad (9th) and Greater Mumbai (10th).
Top 10 dirtiest cities : Dhanbad (73rd), Asansol (72nd), Itanagar (71st), Patna (70th), Meerut (69th), Raipur (68th), Ghaziabad (67th), Jamshedpur (66th), Varanasi (65th) and Kalyan Dombivili (64th).
Swachh Survekshan Survey
⇒ The first Swachh Survekshan Survey was conducted in 2014 before the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched in October 2014 in 2014 in 476 cities and municipalities which have a population of over 1, 00,000. Even then Mysuru was cleanest city of the country.
⇒ A comparative analysis of the two successive surveys shows that four cities have improved their ranks and came into top 10 in 2016. These include Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot and Gangtok.
⇒ Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the government has set a target of constructing over one crore individual household toilets and over 2.5 lakh community toilet seats by 2nd October, 2019.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Clean India Mission or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national campaign of the Union Government, covering 4,041 cities and towns, to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. It is upragaded version of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan.
Objective : It aims to eradicate open defecation by 2 October 2019, the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
It was launched on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi , where Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself cleaned the road. It is India's biggest ever cleanliness drive in which 3 million government employees and school and college students of India have participated.
