Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process begins in Islamabad
5th Heart of Asia conference, an annual gathering of Asian and other countries have commenced in Islamabad, Pakistan. The conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is representing India at the summit.
The high-ranking delegations from 14 participating states, 17 supporting countries and 12 international and regional organisations are participating in the two-day conference.
Theme of the meeting: 'Heart of Asia — Istanbul Process: Enhanced cooperation for countering security threats and promoting connectivity in the Heart of Asia region.'
Objective of the meeting : Enhancing cooperation for countering security threats and promoting connectivity in the region.
Six key areas :- The 14 countries have been pursuing confidence-building measures in six key areas which are disaster management, counter-terrorism, counter- narcotics, trade and investment, regional infrastructure, and education.
The Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process
The Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process was launched in November 2011 to expand practical coordination between Afghanistan and its neighbors and regional partners in facing common threats, including counterterrorism, counternarcotics, poverty, and extremism. The United States and over 20 other nations and organizations serve as “supporting nations” to the process
Member Nations :- Pakistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and the UAE are part of "The Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process"
