  • Rahul Agarwal appointed as Managing Director of Lenovo India
    • Lenovo has appointed Rahul Agarwal as managing director for Lenovo India, Rahul Agarwal took over from Amar Babu, who will now serve as   chief operating officer, Lenovo, Asia Pacific and chairman, Lenovo India.
    • Rahul Agarwal has been at the company for 10 years. Over the last three years, he has served as executive director, commercial & enterprise business at Lenovo India.
    • Rahul's wealth of experience has been instrumental in driving Lenovo's growth and making him the natural choice to take over from Amar Babu
    • Agarwal, over the last three years, has led Lenovo's commercial business and has managed various roles in sales and marketing over the last 10 years
    • In 2014, Lenovo held the third spot with 15.8% market share in the Indian PC segment, while it is aiming to be among the top three in the Indian smartphone market.

  • India joins Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) 
    • India and 49 other founding countries signed an agreement providing the legal framework for the China-led $100 billion multilateral Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) 
    • The 60-article agreement specified each member's share as well as governance structure and policy-making mechanism of the bank, which is designed to finance infrastructure in Asia
    • The delegates from 50 founding countries gathered at the Great Hall of the People for the signing ceremony. Australia was the first country to sign the agreement, followed by 49 other members. Seven more countries are due to sign by the end of the year.
    • China, India and Russia are the three largest shareholders, taking a 30.34%, 8.52%, 6.66% stake, respectively. Their voting shares are calculated at 26.06%, 7.5% and 5.92% 
    • China will have 26.06% of the voting rights within the multilateral institution, giving it a veto in some key decisions despite its insistence it will not have such powers. 
    • The AIIB, which will have billions of dollars to lend is designed to finance infrastructure construction in the continent 
    • The AIIB was proposed by President Xi Jinping in October 2013. A year later, 21 Asian nations, including China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore, had signed an agreement to establish the bank, which will be headquartered in Beijing.

  • Jwala Gutta, Ashwni Ponappa win women’s doubles title of Canada Open Badminton tournament
    • Indian shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa  clinched the Canada Open women’s doubles title by beating Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in straight games of 21-19, 21-16 they won their first title since reuniting after the 2012 London Olympics.
    • In the finals match which was played at Calgary, Canada they defeated Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek by 21-19, 21-16
    • Michelle Li of Canada won the women’s single title, by defeating Kaori Imabeppu of Japan by 21-17 25-23 score in the final match.
    1. Men’s Single title:- Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia won the men’s single title, by beating Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong by 17-21 13-21in tha final match
    2. Women’s Single title:- Michelle Li of Canada won the women’s single title, by beating Kaori Imabeppu of Japan by 21-17 25-23 in the final match
    3. Mixed doubles title:- Chinese pair Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen won the mixed double title by beating Chinese pair Kaixiang Huang and Sijie Wang by 17-21 21-12 21-18

  • India, Thailand ink MoU on avoiding double taxation
    • India and Thailand on Monday signed a number of important agreements, including the double taxation avoidance treaty, and exchanged instruments of ratification on the extradition treaty inked in 2013, which provides for the legal framework for seeking extradition of fugitive offenders.
    • The tax treaty provides for the framework to avoid double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes so as to promote bilateral economic cooperation
    • On the last day of her three-day visit, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj co-chaired the 7th meeting of the India-Thailand Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation.
    • The extradition treaty signed between the two countries in 2013 provides for the legal framework for seeking extradition of fugitive offenders, including those involved in terrorism, transnational crimes, economic offences etc
    • The two countries also inked an MoU on the establishment of the 'Academic Chair' in ayurveda, according to which the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences will set up a Chair at Rangsit University in Thailand to undertake academic and research activities in ayurveda.
    • Both sides also inked an MoU on establishment of the Nalanda University thus By signing this agreement, Thailand joined other East Asian Summit (EAS) countries in the establishment of the university.

  • Former Russian prime minister Yevgeny Primakov passed away at 85
    • Yevgeny Primakov was a Russian politician and diplomat who served as Prime Minister of Russia from 1998 to 1999.
    • His long career included as Foreign Minister,Speaker of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union, and chief of the intelligence service.
    • Yevgeny Primakov was an academician and a member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences
    • He advocated a new strategic triangle between Russia, China and India, a concept that later led to the establishment of the Brics group – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

  • Topalov wins Norway Chess 2015 title
    • Veselin Topalov claimed the Norway Chess 2015 title in Stavanger, 
    • The 18-move draw gave Topalov the title with 6.5 points, half a point ahead of Anand
    • Later, Hikaru Nakamura defeated Levon Aronian to match Anand’s tally and took the third spot
    • Jon Ludvig Hammer upstaged World champion Magnus Carlsen in the battle between two home players
