  • Indian origin British author Neel Mukherjee has been shortlisted for Man Booker Prize 2014 for his second novel "The Lives of Others".

  • Anil Ambani's Reliance Power buys out the hydro power business of Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited for an estimated sum of Rs 12,000 crore.  
    • The company has two plants at Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, and a third one in Uttarakhand accounting for an aggregate capacity of around 1,800 megawatt. 
    • The deal will render Anil Ambani's group as the largest private hydropower provider in India with an estimated capacity of over 5000 MW.

  • The first 'World Day against Trafficking in Persons' is observed on July 30, 2014.   
    • At any given time, an estimated 2.5 million people are trapped in modern-day slavery. 
    • The day is meant to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”

  • Centre launches 'Rashtriya Gokul Mission' to develop efficiency and productivity of indigenous breeds of cows in the country.  
    • The Mission, a focused project under National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development, will seek to enhance milk production and productivity in the native breeds through scientific methods.

  • World Hepatitis Day 2014 is observed across the globe on July 28.  
    • The day raises awareness of the different forms of hepatitis: what they are and how they are transmitted; who is at risk; and the various methods of prevention and treatment. 
    • Hepatitis A: 1.4 million estimated cases occur annually.
    • Hepatitis B: 2 billion people (estimated) worldwide have been infected with the virus.
    • Hepatitis C: 150 million people are chronically infected with the virus.

    • The event is celebrated to promote protection and expansion of the wild tigers and their habitats.

  • RBI revokes the licenses of six Delhi-based Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC).  
    • They are: GE Strategic Investments India, Profound Exports, Two Brothers Holding, Swank Services Private Ltd, Praxis Consulting and Information Services and Credible Microfinance Limited.
