  • Celebrated cartoonist RK Laxman, creator of Iconic cartoon character "Common Man", passes away aged 94. 
    • He, brother of the eminent novelist RK Narayan, used the character to convey important social messages using humour and satire as a tool.
    • His daily cartoon 'You said it' featured on the front page of The Times of India for over 50 years.
    • Notable Awards: Padma Vibhushan (2005), Padma Bhushan (1971) and Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts in 1984.
    • Gattu - the popular mascot for the Asian Paints group - is also his creation.
  • Greece elects anti-austerity leftist leader Alexis Tsipras as the new Prime Minister.  
    • His ultra-left Syriza party's unusual coalition with small right-wing party won the election by tapping into popular dissatisfaction with austerity drive imposed by the government as part of the economic bailout terms set by the EU.
    • He will now ask for renegotiation on those terms to stay put with EU membership.
  • Miss Universe 2015 crown goes to Colombia; Paulina Vega becomes only the 2nd from the country after Luz Marina Zuluaga (1956) to be crowned the coveted title. 
    • Miss USA and Miss Ukraine finished 2nd and 3rd in the 88-nation competition.
    • Along with the Miss World and Miss Earth contests, Miss Universe is one of the three largest beauty pageants in the world.
    • Sushmita Sen (1994) and Lara Dutta (2000) are the only two Indian to have grabbed this honour.
  • US gives a helping hand in developing Allahabad, Ajmer and Visakhapatnam as Smart Cities
    • United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will fund feasibility studies and provide advisory services on the project in addition to mobilizing private sector expertise and resources to address important aviation and energy related infrastructure connected to development of smart cities.
  • President gave away 104 Padma Awards this year: The list comprises of 9 Padma Vibhushan, 20 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri Awardees.  
    • 17 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 17 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs while 4 have been honoured Posthumously.
    • Padma Vibhushan awardees: L K Advani, Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Swami Rambhadracharya, Malur Ramaswamy Srinivasan, Kottayan K. Venugopal and Karim Al Hussaini Aga Khan (Foreigner).
  • Edgar Lungu becomes the new and 6th President of Zambia.  

    He will replace the late Michael Sata, who died in office in October last year, for the remaining of his term.

  • Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh are honoured with the highest peacetime military honour 'Ashok Chakra'; both the Armymen get the award posthumously. - read more cat
