  • Government clears "Swachh Bharat Mission for Urban Areas".   
    • The sanitation mission will be launched on 2nd October, 2014 in all 4041 statutory towns. 
    • The programme includes elimination of open defecation, conversion of insanitary toilets to pour flush toilets, eradication of manual scavenging and improvement in Municipal Solid Waste Management. 
    • It also aims to bring about a behavioural change in people regarding healthy sanitation practices.
    • It would cover 1.04 crore households, provide 2.5 lakh seats of community toilets, 2.6 lakh seats of public toilets and solid waste management facility for all towns.
    • The total expected cost of the programme over 5-year sanctioned period is Rs 62,009 crore.
  • Supreme Court allows only 4 coal blocs to function; revokes all other 214 allocations allotted between 1993 to 2010. 
    • The apex court has directed the central government to take a fresh and transparent route to allocate coal blocks from now on.
    • The four coal blocks, to be spared the gallows, belong to public sector companies SAIL, NTPC and two ultra-mega power projects. 
    • The already operational 46 coal blocks have been given six months’ timeframe to shut shop and join the fresh bidding.
    • The companies will have to pay the loss as compensation As for the non-operation of the allocated mines, defaulters will have to pay fine of Rs 295 per mega tonne as estimated by the CAG. 
    • The ruling will result in bad debt as many of these companies have taken huge amount of loans from banks.
  • Centre to roll out a dedicated 3-digit national helpline number for natural disasters.   
    • It will be a 3-digit country-wide helpline number which any person affected by a natural disaster can call for help and rescue. All agencies like the armed forces, disaster management forces and state police will get details from such distress calls and can plan quick rescue action accordingly. 
    • The decision takes its lessons from the recent Kashmir flood, where snapping of all communication lines, had further deteriorated the situation.

  • Swedish furniture retaile giant IKEA to set up its first store in India at Hyderabad.  
    • IKEA, the first company to be allowed to make 100% FDI investment in single brand retail, is one of the largest furniture, household goods and textiles retail company in the world.
  • PM inaugurates India Food Park in Tumkur, Karnataka.  
    • The food processing facility aims to integrate the entire food value chain from farm to plate at a single location.
    • Its a step in the direction of boosting the agricultural economy through value addition and infrastructure creation.
  • Centre approves Indo-Nepal agreement on "Electric Power Trade, Cross-Border Transmission Interconnection and Grid Connectivity".
    • It will further strengthen power trade between the two neighbours. 
    • Nepal currently imports around 200 MW electricity from India annually.
