  • Switzerland clinch the Davis Cup 2014 defeating host France in the final.  
    • It was the 103rd edition of the tournament that is competed by national men's tennis teams.
    • The Swiss great Roger Federer played a key role in the historic victory.
    • He now has won almost all the titles in men's tennis under the sun that includes all four Grand Slam titles, ATP titles, Masters Series, Olympic Gold and the Davis Cup.

  • Delhi-Kathmandu bus service kicks off from today.  
    • The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will run a luxury Volvo bus on the route with tentative one-way fare around Rs 2,200.
    • The bus will complete its journey via Agra, Lucknow and Gorakhpur in 30 hours.
    • The bus service is expected to provide a big boost to trade, tourism and cultural ties between the two neighbours.
    • DTC has already been running the Delhi-Lahore bus service - launched by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in March 1999.
    • The central government is looking to open similar road connectivities to other SAARC nations by inking related agreements and protocols with them.

  • Renowned Kathak exponent Sitara Devi breathes her last at 94.  
    • Among her many accolades are: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1969), Padma Shri (1973) and Kalidas Samman (1995).
    • She was conferred on the title of 'Nritya Samragini' (empress of dancing) by the Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore at the young age of 16 for her outstanding performance.

  • Deepak Gupta is appointed as the Chairman of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).  
    • He is the first non-UPSC member in history to be appointed as UPSC chairman. 
    • Earlier the office used to be manned exclusively by one of the members of the Commission.
    • He replaced Rajni Razdan as such.

    • Female Indian cyclist Deborah scripts history by winning four Gold Medals in the championship.
    • Two of her gold medals came in the women's elite keirin and sprint finals.

  • Indian Women Boxers Sarjubala Devi and Saweety contend with Silver medals in the World Women's Boxing Championships held in South Korea.   
    • Sarjubala lost to Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan in the 48-kg category while Saweety succumbed to China's Xiaoli Yang in the 81-kg category.
