  • India becomes 4th country in the world and first in Asia to land on Mars. - read more cat
  • UN climate summit 2014 begin in New York.  
    • The meeting aims to encourage 120 participating countries to sign up a comprehensive new global climate agreement at talks in Paris next year.
    • This is the largest high-level global climate meeting since 2009.
  • Centre constitutes 'Bibek Debroy committee' to revamp Railway Board.  
    • The committee will suggest ways to restructure the board to ensure faster decision-making.
    • The panel is expected to submit the report in a year. 
    • Other members on the panel are: Gurcharan Das, Ravi Narain, KM Chandrashekhar, Partha Mukhopadhyay and Rajendra Kashyap.
  • Andhra Pradesh raises upper age-limit for direct recruitment in government service from 34 to 40 years.
    • The move will try to undo the shrinking job opportunities for the educated unemployed youth in the state which has arisen out of the recent bifurcation.
    • However, it will not be applicable to the recruitment in uniformed services like police, excise, fire, prisons and forest departments which require high physical standards. 
    • The concession will only be in force till September 30, 2016. 
  • Google India rolls out new campaign to enhance internet penetration among women.  
    • The 'digital literacy' initiative is in collaboration with Farhan Akhtar's MARD.
    • 'Helping Women Get Online' - Google India 's first such campaign - has so far been hugely successful.
    • More women (percentage increment) have joined internet bandwagon than men eversince its launch last year.
    • It was launched in association with Intel, HUL and Axis Bank.
  • Amit Mathew is unanimously elected as the Chairman of Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for the year 2014-15.
    • He is the resident editor and director of Malayala Manorama.
    • The post of 'Deputy Chairman' has gone to Shashidhar Sinha.
  • VG Mathew is appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of South Indian Bank for a 3-year term.
    • He will replace VA Joseph as such beginning October 1, 2014.
  • 4th International Buddhist Conclave begins in Bodhgaya and Sarnath.  
    • Its India's initiative to boost Buddhist pilgrimage in the country by creating awareness and improving hospitality services.
    • The last three conclaves have taken place in: New Delhi and Bodhgaya (February 2004); Nalanda and Bodhgaya (February 2010) and Varanasi and Bodhgaya (September 2012).
