    Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Areas Divided into two Separate Headquarters


    In order to enhance operational and administrative organizational structure Union Ministry of Defence has divided erstwhile Maharashtra and Gujarat (MnG) Naval Area into two separate headquarters.

    It was divided into two under Flag Officer Maharashtra Area and Flag Officer Gujarat Naval Area.

    The divison will facilitate:-

    • Better vigilance on the sea border with Pakistan
    • Better communication and coordination with the state government,local authorities and fishermen

    Rear Admiral Satish Namdeo Ghormade assumed the charge of Maharashtra Area and Rear Admiral Murlidhar Sadashiv Pawar assumed the charge of Gujarat Naval Area.

    Rear Admiral SN Ghormade :-

    • Rear Admiral SN Ghormade is a graduate of National Defence Acedamy (NDA),Khadakwasla.He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 1984.
    • His career spans over 31 years. During this period he has been through a myriad of operational and staff appointments.
    • His operational appointments include commands of the Guided Missile Frigate INS Brahmaputra, Submarine Rescue Vessel INS Nireekshak, and Minesweeper INS Allepey
    • He is the recipient of the Nau Sena Medal in 2007 by the President of India and Commendation by Chief of Naval Staff in 2000.
  • Ex-Cabinet Secretary Alok Rawat Appointed as 1st Male Member of National Commission for Women



    • Former Cabinet Secretary Alok Rawat has been appointed as the first male member of the National Commission for Women thus filling the fourth seat in the five-member body.
    • Mr Rawat is a 1977 batch Sikkim cadre IAS officer, and  has served as Director/Joint Secretary in Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways; Secretary (UPSC).
    • He has also served as Secretary (Coordination and Public Grievances) in the Cabinet Secretariat and Secretary in Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

    About National Commission for Women:-

    • The National Commission for Women (NCW) is a statutory body of the Government of India which is concerned with advising the government on all policy matters affecting women.
    • It was established in January 1992 under the provisions of the Indian Constitution to review the constitutional and legal safeguards for women. 
    • The first head of the commission was Jayanti Patnaik. On 17 September 2014 Lalitha Kumaramangalam was appointed Chairperson
  • Rajnath Singh inaugurates Indian Police Foundation, Institute



    • Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Indian Police Foundation and the Indian Police Institute in New Delhi.The setting up of the institutes is in line with the Prime Minister's vision of a SMART, professionally competent and people-centric police.
    • The Indian Police Foundation and the Indian Police Institute aim at embarking a culture of research and evidence-based policing in India and to avoid subjectivity, personal biases and errors in decision-making.
    • The Police Foundation and Institute aims to bring together the police professionals, academia and other stake holders including citizens and provide a platform to research, discuss, ideate and seek the answers.
    • The Indian Police Foundation and the Indian Police Institute has been set up and registered as an All India Society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. 

    The Society has two divisions namely:-

    1. The Indian Police Foundation (a think tank) 
    2. The Indian Police Institute (a professional institute for research, knowledge management and training).

    Indian Police Foundation :-

    • The Indian Police Foundation is a think tank to deliberate, ideate, strategize, and lead the advocacy towards realizing the much-needed transformational reforms in the Indian Police.

    Indian Police Institute:-

    • Indian Police Institute is a research and training institute for police officers for the pursuit of professional excellence and evidence-based policing. The Indian Police Institute aims at carrying out research by jointly involving police officers and academic researchers for better understanding of the issues and challenges that the police face in their daily work. 
  • Britain signs landmark nuclear deal with China



    • Britain and China has signed a major nuclear deal in which China will build United Kingdom’s first nuclear power plant since the 1980s.
    • The deal was signed between British Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese President Xi Jinping.The agreement is the first major Chinese investment in a Western nuclear facility
    • During the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to the UK Beijing and London has secured deals worth about 40 billion pounds (USD 62 billion).
    • China and UK has also signed deals worth more than 12 billion pounds, including with BP PLC.They also landed a 2.6 billion pound deal to make new cruise ships

    Key facts of the deal :-

    • The nuclear deal was signed between French state owned EDF Energy and General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) of China.
    • As per the dealnuclear power plant will be built at Hinkley Point, Somerset near London with total planned investment of USD 28 billion  
    • China’s General Nuclear Corp will take a one-third stake in the planned usd 28 billion Hinkley Point nuclear plant owned by France’s EDF.
    • The power generated at Hinkley Point is expected to come on stream in 2025 and will generate enough energy to power 6 million homes.
    • London Taxi Company, owned by the Chinese company Geely has announced further investment to launch a new generation of zero-emissions black cabs.
    • CGN will also take a two-thirds stake in the Bradwell nuclear plant east of London, where it plans to build a Chinese-designed reactor, which will be China’s first showcase for its nuclear technology.

    • The auto biography of Sam Pitroda written with the help of David Chanoff, an American author "The book Dreaming Big: My Journey to Connect India" has been released.
    • The book describes the journey of Satanarayan Gangaram Pitroda, considered as the ‘father of Indian telecom revolution.It embarks a life long journey of Sam Pitroda starting from his birth in 1964 in Titilagarh in Odisha to his revolutionary career in United States and India.
    • The book delineates his success in the technology space, his return to India to assist the former Rajiv Gandhi to assure in telecom revolution in the country and important incidents in his life post the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi
