  • Half of the world's newborn death occurs in 5 countries every year; India tops the list

    • More than 5.5 million babies are born and die each year without a birth or death certificate.
    • Fatalism, poor care and lack of investment have been dubbed as the major causes for this calamity.
    • Three million of them are newborns while 2.6 million babies are stillborn. 
    • Nearly all the deaths are preventable, with half occurring during labour.
    • The whopping number of deaths is more than that from AIDS which was just around 2.3 million in the peak year of 2005.
  • China and Russia signs a $400 billion gas deal.  
    • China is looking to tap into the vast energy reserves of Russia to reduce its dependence on Coal that result in heavy pollution. 
    • Pollution is emerging as one of the most fatal health hazard in the country that is home to few of the most polluted cities worldover.
    • This is also expected to boost sluggish Russian economy marred by sanctions imposed by the west over Ukraine Crisis.
  • RBI instructs all banks to install talking ATMs with Braille keypads from July 1, 2014 onwards.  
    • The step is taken to make the facility disabled-friendly.
    • Banks have also been told to lay down the road map for converting all existing ATMs into the same.
  • Sulabh International Museum of Toilets (New Delhi) has been ranked 3rd among the world’s 10 weirdest museums by Time magazine.  
    • The museum traces the history of the toilet for the past 4,500 years.
    • The list was topped by Icelandic Phallological Museum (Reykjavik) followed by Museum of Bad Art, Massachusetts (US) at the 2nd spot.
  • India's largest online retailer,, acquires fashion e-retailer for approximately USD 400 million.   
    • The deal is seen as a result of stiffening competition spurred by the entry of global e-retail heavyweight Amazon.
    • India's bustling e-commerce market is estimated at about $600 million.
  • Narendra Kumar Verma to take over as the new Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Limited.  
    • He is currently Director for Exploration in OVL’s parent company, ONGC.
    • The post fell vacant after Dinesh K Sarraf was elevated as Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC. 
  • IndiGo retains the top spot in the domestic passenger aviation market in April with 31.6% market share.  
    • The Low-cost carrier is followed by Jet Airways with 21.8% market share (including JetLite), Air India with 18.3% market share and Spice Jet with 17.9% market share.
