  • 'SAARC Regional Railways Agreement' gets cabinet clearance.  
    • The Agreement will inter-connect the region through rail network which will be low-cost, energy efficient and environmentally sustainable.
    • It will improve trade and economic links between the countries of this region which are low on connectivity.
    • The low connectivity leads to high costs and low volumes of trade.

  • Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) launched.  

    The scheme would help in :- 

    • Improvement in hours of power supply in rural areas 
    • Reduction in peak load 
    • Improvement in billed energy based on metered consumption
    • Providing access to electricity to rural households. 

    It has 2 components 

    • To separate agriculture and non agriculture feeders facilitating judicious rostering of supply to agricultural and non-agricultural consumers in rural areas.
    • Strengthening and augmentation of sub transmission and distribution infrastructure in rural areas, including metering of distribution transformers/feeders/consumers.

  • Union Cabinet clears launch of 'Integrated Power Development Scheme'.  
    • The scheme will help in reduction in AT&C losses (Aggregate Technical & Commercial losses ), establishment of IT enabled energy accounting/auditing system, improvement in billed energy based on metered consumption and improvement in collection efficiency. 

    How? 

    • Strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution network in the urban areas.
    • Metering of distribution transformers /feeders / consumers in the urban areas. 
    • IT enablement of distribution sector and strengthening of distribution network.

  • 'Chennai Monorail Project' phase-1 gets ‘in-principle’ approval from Urban Development Ministry.  
    • The first phase will connect Poonamalle with Kathipara over a 20.68 km rail network.
    • The project would be implemented under ‘Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT)’ model and with no help from the centre.
