International Day of Yoga 2016 observed across the globe
June 21 was declared as International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014, almost unanimously.
Since then it is celebrated annually. The idea of an International Day of Yoga was although first proposed by Narendra Modi during his speech at the UNGA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN Address suggested the date of June 21, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world.
2016 International Day of Yoga : Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the second International Yoga Day celebrations at the event held at the Capitol Complex, Chandigarh. Over 30,000 people performed yoga asanas during the event.
India's Permanent Mission to the UN organized the celebrations at the United Nations on June 20 and 21. A special event titled "Conversation with Yoga Masters – Yoga for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" is the centerpiece. - India won Silver medal at Archery World Cup in Antalya
The Indian mixed recurve team of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das has won the silver medal at the Archery World Cup held in Antalya, Turkey. In the final clash at Konyaalti Beach Park, the Indian team lost to South Korea 1-5.
In the first of the match, Indian team trailed by 0-2 score against the top-seeded Korean pair of Choi Misun and Ku Bonchan.
The Sixth seeded Indian recurve duo reached final of this world cup after defeating second-seeded Italian pair of Mauro Nespoli and Guendalina Sartori by 5-1 score in the semi-finals.
Earlier, the women's recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi Laishram and Laxmirani Majhi also went down in the bronze medal clash to Italy 1-5.>Login To Save for Revision
- HAL unveils indigenous basic trainer aircraft HTT-40
Public-sector aerospace and defence major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has inaugurated indigenous Basic Trainer Aircraft (BTA) HTT-40 in Bengaluru.
The aircraft made its maiden flight recently the HAL Airport in Bengaluru in presence of Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
The indigenous content on HTT-40 is close to 80 per cent. Almost 50 per cent of the components on HTT-40 are manufactured by private players of the Indian aerospace ecosystem.
HTT-40 has been designed to meet the current requirement of the IAF with the provision for role expansion to attach weapons to the trainer aircraft.
Digital Mock Up (DMU), real time systems clash analysis, laser tracking of assembly jigs, six degree of freedom, mathematical model and complete glass cockpit are among the many first initiatives of the project.>Login To Save for Revision
- PM Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President inaugurate Duraiappah stadium in Jaffna
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Inaugurated the renovated Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna.
While the Sri Lankan president was present at the stadium in Jaffna, Modi joined the event through video-conferencing from New Delhi.
About Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna :
The newly renovated Duraiappah Stadium has been named after Jaffna's Mayor of the 1970s Alfred Thambirajah Duraiappah.
The the stadium, which was abandoned during the civil war and in disuse since 1997, was renovated by the Indian government at a cost of Sri Lanka Rupee (LKR) 146 million in 18 months.
The stadium project had strengthened the bilateral ties, which were very significant at the international and regional levels too.

India has constructed 45,100 houses for the civil-war affected families under the flagship housing project. India has also constructed a 200-bedded hospital complex in Vavuniya, costing LKR 187 milllion.
India has commenced the work for the Faculties of Engineering and Agriculture, each at a cost of LKR 300 million. Northern Railway Project, built at the cost of USD 800 million, has helped Sri Lanka to resume train services between Colombo and Jaffna after 25 years.>Login To Save for Revision
- Australia wins 2016 Champions Trophy title of Hockey
Australia has won the 2016 Champions Trophy title of Hockey by defeating India by 3-1 score. With this victory, Australia created history by winning the title for record 14 times. With this defeat India settled for the silver medal.
India lost 1-3 in the shootout to world champions Australia after the title encounter remained goalless in regulation period.
For Australia, in penalty shootout goals were scored by Aran Zalewski, Daniel Beale and Simon Orchard while for India, the single goal was scored by Harmanpreet Singh.
Champions Trophy Hockey Title :
The Hockey Champions Trophy is an international field hockey tournament held by the International Hockey Federation.
It was founded in 1978 by Pakistan's Air Marshal Nur Khan and the Pakistan Hockey Federation, it features the world's top-ranked field hockey teams competing in a round robin format.
Earlier, the tournament was organized annually, but since 2014 it has become a biennial event, due to the introduction of the Hockey World League. - Power Ministry launches 'URJA' app to better consumer connect
The Union Ministry of Power has launched ‘URJA’- Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan Mobile app on the side-lines of ongoing two day Conference of Power Ministers at Cansaulim in South Goa.
The mobile app has been developed by Power Finance Corporation (PFC) on behalf of Union Ministry of Power. The app aims to enhance consumer connect with the Urban Power Distribution sector by providing information of IT enabled towns on important parameters which concern the consumers like outage information, timely release of connections, addressing complaints, power reliability etc.
The Union Minister also launched the Pradhan Mantri UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LED for all) Yojana in Goa with a target of replacing approximately 15 lakh LED bulbs, impacting nearly 5 lakh households.
Under the scheme, consumers are entitled to 3 LED bulbs of 9W each at a subsidized rate of Rs.25/, as against a market price of Rs.300-350. - SBI rolls out Rs 200-cr start-up fund
India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has set up a Rs 200-crore fund to support start-ups in the financial technology (fintech) space.
It will provide assistance of up to 3 crore rupees to a company registered in India for promoting their business innovations using information technology for banking and related activities
The bank has also formed a mentoring team to assist start-ups. It will support, monitor and make a report on the progress and utilisation of the funds.
The team will facilitate and guide businesses, extending help in various areas, including additional funding, legal and financial assistance.
It should be noted that SBI already has launched InCube, a single window banking relationship support for startups to provide financial advisory through their dedicated branch in Bengaluru.>Login To Save for Revision
- Yog Geet released for International Yoga Day
Union Ministry of AYUSH has released a Yog Geet (Yoga song) sung by Gandhar T D Jadhav and Gatha Jadhav to mark the second International Yoga Day on 21 June 2016.
The Yoga song was selected from the 1,000 entries were received through a national-level competition organised by the AYUSH Ministry.
This song is of three minutes and 15 seconds duration in Hindi and has been written and produced by Deeraj Saraswat.

- New Chinese system named world’s top supercomputer
A new Chinese computer system that can make 93 quadrillions calculations per second has claimed the top spot on the list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.
The computer called Sunway TaihuLight developed by the National Research Centre of Parallel Computer Engineering and Technology (NRCPC) is built entirely using processors designed and made in China.
The supercomputer installed at the National Supercomputing Centre in China displaced Tianhe-2, an Intel-based Chinese supercomputer that has claimed the top 1 spot on the past six TOP500 lists. The closely watched list is issued twice a year.
Sunway TaihuLight is twice as fast and three times as efficient as Tianhe-2, which posted a performance of 33.86 quadrillions of calculations per second.
Titan, a Cray X40 system installed at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is now at the third position, with 17.59 quadrillions of calculations per second.
Sequoia, an IBM BlueGene/Q system installed at DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Fujitsu’s K computer installed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Japan are at the fourth and fifth positions respectively.>Login To Save for Revision
- Nico Rosberg wins European Grand Prix in Baku
Nico Erik Rosberg the German Formula One driver for Mercedes Formula One team has won the 2016 European Grand Prix of Formula One.
It was Rosberg’s overall ninetieth championship title of F1 in his career and the fifth win in the 2016 season.
Earlier he had won Australian Grand Prix, Bahrain Grand Prix, Chinese Grand Prix and Russian Grand Prix in the 2016 season.
European Grand Prix title, 2016 was the eighth race of the 2016 season of Formula One in which total 11 teams had participated. The race was run on a street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan. Rankings after 2016 European Grand Prix :
