    Typhoon Koppu smashes into the Philippines

    • Powerful Typhoon Koppu hit the northern Philippines early Sunday, battering the coast with powerful winds of 240 kph that forecasters warned could last up to three days.Typhoon Koppu has unleashed landslides and floods across a wide area of the Philippines on Sunday, forcing thousands to flee. 
    • About 6,500 people were evacuated from their homes and taken to safer ground just before the typhoon struck. Flights and ferry services in the north have been cancelled and some bus services in mountain areas suspended due to the threat of landslides.
    • The eye of tropical cyclone (typhoon) Koppu has struck the remote northern coastal town of Casiguran which is 215 kms northeast of Philippines capital city Manila.President Benigno Aquino made a televised warning, the first time he had done so since Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, which killed more than 6,300 people.
    • The Philippines is hit by an average of 20 storms each year, many of them deadly. The North eastern coast of the country is one of the most tropical cyclone-prone coastlines on Earth.

    Renowned Egyptian novelist Gamal el-Ghitani dies at 70

    • One of the most acclaimed novelists of  Egypt , Gamal el-Ghitani, died Sunday morning at the age of 70. He had been in a coma in hospital for two months after being admitted with respiratory problems.
    • Gamal el-Ghitani, was an Egyptian author of historical and political novels and cultural and political commentaries and was the editor-in-chief of the literary periodical Akhbar Al-Adab till 2011.

    Facts to know about El-Ghitani:-

    • El-Ghitani was born on 9 May 1945 in Gihena, Egypt. He began writing at a young age and had his first short story published when he was only 14
    • He was originally trained to be a carpet designer, Ghitani took up journalism in his 20s and went on to write historical fiction.
    • In 1969 he switched careers and became a journalist for the Egyptian newspaper Akhbar El Yom ("The Day's News").
    • Much of his work has been widely translated, including the 1974 novel Zayni Barakat, considered a seminal portrayal of authoritarian rule set in the Mamluk era.

    Awards and honours :- 

    • In 2005, he won a French Award for translated literature "Laure Bataillon", one of the highest French awards to be bestowed upon non-French writers.
    • In 2009, he was awarded the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Ren, the award is worth about USD 200,000 and is one of the world's richest literary awards.

    Ghitani was one of several intellectuals who supported the army's ousting of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013, despite the harsh crackdown against the army's opponents that followed.

    India's short film 'An Old Dog's Diary' wins award at London Film Fest

    Indian short film "An Old Dog's Diary", directed by Shai Heredia and Shumona Goel, has won the best short film award at the 2015 London Film Festival (LFF). "An Old Dog's Diary" is a 11 -minute-long film that reveals the cultural conditions of Indian avant-garde painter Francis Newton Souza’s work and its institutionalisation by assembling the puzzle-piece evocations of his portrait. The film was earlier showcased in the Wavelengths category at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

    • The BFI London Film Festival is the UK's largest public film event, screening more than 300 features, documentaries and shorts from almost 50 countries. 
    • The BFI London Film Festival is currently in its 59th year is run every year in the second half of October under the umbrella of the British Film Institute.

    PV Sindhu loses Denmark Open final to Olympic champ Li Xuerui

    • Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu suffered a straight-game defeat against Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China in the final of the USD 650,000 Super Series Premier badminton event, played at Odense, Denmark by a score of 19-21, 12-21. It was Li’s second title of Denmark Open and earlier she had won it in 2014.
    • It was really a good day for China as in the men’s single category, also China’s Chen Long has won the 2015 title. He has won the title for record 3rd time after he had earlier won it in 2013 and 2014 .

    Facts about Denmark Open Title :-

    • The Denmark Open, which was formerly known as Danish Open, is an annual badminton tournament held in Denmark and organized by Danmarks Badminton Forbund. The tournament started in 1935. The tournament is usually played in late October each year.

    5th Sultan of Johor Cup Final: Great Britain wins 2015 Sultan of Johor Cup of Hockey

    • Great Britain defeated Indian junior men's hockey team in the 2015 Sultan of Johor Cup . It should be noted that Great Britain is the only team to have beaten India in the tournament. 
    • The teams were level 2-2 after full time in the title encounter played at Johor Bahru, Malaysia but later India lost to Great Britain in penalty shoot by 3-4 goals score. Sumit Kumar and Harmanpreet Singh with three goals each have been the top scorers for India in tournament.
    • In the tournament Malaysia were awarded bronze while India took silver. Great Britain’s Chris Wyver was adjudged the best goal keeper of the tournament while their captain won the top goalscorer award. Indian skipper Harjeet Singh took the man of the match award.

    "2015 Sultan of Johor Cup of Hocey" :-

    • India had earlier finished at the top of the table in the league encounter just losing one match ironically to Great Britain
    • Malaysia has been placed at third position in the tournament after they had defeated Argentina by 3-2 goal scores in semi-final.
    • Australia, Argentina, India, Pakistan, Great Britain and alaysia were 6 teams that had participated in 2015 edition of tournament.

    About Sultan of Johor Cup of Hockey :-

    • Established in 2011 the tournament is held annually in Malaysia.  It is the only invitational junior hockey competition played at international level.
    • The championship is named after the Sultan of Johor, the nominal ruler of the Malaysian state of Johor.
    • It should be noted that India is most successful team in the tournament and has won it for two times in 2013 and 2014.

    • Saketh is currently ranked 168 but this victory will help him to score 90 points in his pocket and bring his in top 150 list

    • Aditya Birla Group has launched abof.com (all about fashion: ae-bof), an online fashion portal for apparel, footwear and accessories for men and women as part of its e-commerce initiative. 
    • Unlike other shopping portals, abof will not give discounts and will display a curated collection rather than a lot of options. Kumar Mangalam Birla said. "It is easier to give many options than make a selection and then give that as an offering"
    • Aprivate and unlisted company, Aditya Birla Online Fashion (abof) will mostly cater to those in the 18-25 age group. Prashant Gupta, has been appointed as the president and CEO of abof.
    • The portal will provide a personalized shopping experience. It is equipped with India’s first-of-its-kind 3D virtual trial room - a tool where customers can instantly view themselves in any product by inputting their basic body proportions.The tool allows one to layer various garments to check out looks
    • Aditya Birla Group has created a new team of about 200 people— mostly based in Bengaluru and poached from online players such as Snapdeal, Myntra and Zomato—over the last nine months. The group has also tied up with third party vendors for logistics.

    The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on October 17 throughout the world.  It was officially recognised by the United Nations and the first commemoration of the event took place in Paris, France, in 1987. 

    Significance of Day:-

    • 17 October presents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard, and a moment to recognize that poor people are the first ones to fight against poverty. Participation of the poor themselves has been at the center of the Day's celebration since its very beginning. The commemoration of October 17th also reflects the willingness of people living in poverty to use their expertise to contribute to the eradication of poverty.

    United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), can emphasized that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    15 years ago a target was set of halving extreme poverty in the world,  by the landmark Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), has already been reached in 2015.

    2015 Theme:- "Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination"  The theme is a special as it is one of the agendas of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN.

    Rajasthan government notifies quota for Gujjars and other Special Backward Classes

    • Rajasthan government has issued a notification to provide 5 per cent quota to Gujjars and other Special Backward Classes (SBC) , a bill was passed in this regard by   Rajasthan Assembly last month.
    • According to the notification, the Rajasthan Special Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services under the State) Act, 2015, would provide five percent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the Gujjar, Banjara, Rabari, and Gadia Lohar communities in Rajasthan.
    • The Rajasthan Assembly, in September, had passed two separate Bills for providing five per cent reservation to SBCs and 14 per cent reservation to Economically Backward Classes (EBC) of unreserved categories.

    • G.R. Chandak, a senior scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, has been appointed the director Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad, under the Department of Biotechnology. He succeeds J. Gowrishankar, who relinquished his position at the centre.
    • Chandak received his MD in Biochemistry from Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University and PhD in Biochemistry from Osmania University.
    • His research interests include understanding the genetic and epigenetic basis of complex disorders of pancreas including chronic pancreatitis, type 2 diabetes and intermediate traits associated with them with a focus on foetal origins of adult common diseases.
    • He has published close to 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Nature, Nature Genetics, Lancet, Gut, Diabetes, Diabetologia, J Medical Genetics and authored a number of books. He is a member of Science Akademi's and an Adjunct Group  Leader at Genome Institute of Singapore.
