  • World Day to Combat Desertification 2014 is observed across the globe on June 17.  
    • Approximately 1.5 billion people globally depend on degrading areas for their livelihoods.
    • The area is also home to nearly half of the world’s very poor (42%) people.
    • The theme of this year is "Land Belongs to the Future - Let’s Climate Proof It".
    • The day was declared by UN as such in 1994 to combat desertification and drought by promoting public awareness of the issue, and the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in afflicted countries, particularly in Africa.
  • Delhi has become the first 'kerosene-free city' in the country.  
    • It means government is issuing no subsidised kerosene in the national capital and thus helping the country save upto Rs 200 crore every year with the move.
  • Indian left-arm spinner Murli Kartik retires from all forms of cricket.  
    • He played eight Tests, 37 ODIs and one Twenty20 international for India. 
  • Government launches the SME Finance Facilitation Centre.  
    • The centre - an initiative by CII, will facilitate access to finance and credit for SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) across countrywide.
