    • India has made its debut in the Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) list of top 200 universities globally. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) have been placed 147 and 179 respectively in the QS World University Rankings for 2015-16, which has the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard are at the top two positions.
    • In the previous edition of  Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS) list  none of the Indian  universities were in QS’ top 200 list but  IIT-D has improved its position from the previous years’ rank of 235 and IISC Bangalore is a new entry in the ranking list
    • According to the QS list, there are 14 Indian institutions in the World University Rankings and half of them are among the global 400. In the list of top 300 are, IIT Bombay, which was placed at 222 last year has moved up to 202, IIT Madras up from 321 to 254 and IIT Kanpur at 271 from 300.
    • Jawaharlal Nehru University leads the Indian universities in Arts and Humanities table placed at 168th position while the University of Delhi is placed at 191 in this section and 191 in the Social Sciences and Management section.

    • Hormusji N Cama, Managing Director of Bombay Samachar and Riyad Mathew, Director of Malayala Manorama, have been unanimously elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively of the Press Trust of India. 
    • Hormusji N Cama whose daily is the oldest continuously-published newspaper in India from 1855, succeeds Mahendra Mohan Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of the Jagran Prakashan while Mathew succeeds him as the Vice Chairman. 

    Hormusji N Cama :-

    • Hormusji N Cama is currently the Chairman of the Readership Studies Council of India, has also served as President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS). He is also on the Board of Council for Fair Business Practices and Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC).

    Riyad Mathew :-

    • Riyad Mathew Director of Malayala Manorama and is a Senior Assistant Editor of the Malayala Manorama, which publishes one of India’s leading weekly magazines, The Week.
    • He also has worked as a correspondent with Associated Press (AP) in Washington. Mathew holds a masters degree in journalism from the University of Maryland

    Press Trust of India (PTI) was registered in 1947 and started functioning in 1949. Press Trust of India (PTI) is the largest news agency in India. It is headquartered in New Delhi and is a nonprofit cooperative among more than 500 Indian newspapers and has 984 full-time employees. It employs over 400 journalists and 500 part-time correspondents located in most of the district headquarters in the country. Press Trust of India is the only news agency in South Asia which operates its own communication satellite, an INSAT, to broadcast news and information.

    Nepal Rejects Proposal to Declare Itself a Hindu Nation , decides to stay secular

    • Nepal's Constituent Assembly rejected the proposal to declare Nepal a Hindu state and reaffirmed that the Hindu-majority nation will remain secular.
    • The proposal made by pro-Hindu National Democratic Party Nepal to amend the constitution to make Nepal a Hindu state was rejected by more than two-thirds of lawmakers who declared that the country should remain secular.
    • The proposal to amend the constitution received the support of only 21 lawmakers of the Constituent Assembly in the total 601 member assembly. In order to pass this proposal, it was necessary to secure the required 10 percent of votes.
    • Nepal was converted into secular state in 2008 through a Parliament declaration, when monarchy was abolished from the country following the success of the People's Movement.
    • Nepal has entered the final phase of promulgating its new Constitution with the three major parties going ahead with clause-wise voting on the final draft of the statute in the Constituent Assembly.

    Indian Railways partners with Google Fiber to provide free WiFi across 400 railway stations

    • Google and Indian Railways have partnered to launch a new project under the code name Project Nilgiri, that will deliver free Wi-fi access to around 400 railway stations across India.
    • Google will be using the Google Fiber project, that’ll provide high speed internet connection for the travellers. Commuters will be able to access Wi-fi only after mobile number verification through a one-time password sent over SMS.
    • Initially, a user will get high speed internet connectivity for the first 30 minutes and thereafter, the speed will drop and become slow. The connection of the users will however still be “active”.
    • The project employs Google’s Fiber technology under which the company provides internet services up to a speed of 1 Gbps. Google Fiber was launched in 2010 and the service is available only in the USA.Google has collaborated with RailTel for the platform and infrastructure to get started with the project.

    The Sports Ministry today gave recognition to the Indian Kalarippayattu Federation as a Regional Sports Federation. This recognition means granting a major role to the Indian Kalarippayattu Federation (IKF) for promotion and development of Kalarippayattu sport in India. Kalarippayattu is a form of martial art which originated from Kerala.

    Mahindra Group enters e-commerce segment with M2ALL launch

    • 16.9 billion USD Mahindra group has finally made it's debut into the e-commerce space with the launch of M2ALL.com, an e-marketplace for Mahindra products and services.
    • The online marketplace has begun taking bookings for the new compact SUV Mahindra TUV300 the compact sports utility vehicle from the Mahindra stable.
    • Mahindra e-Market Private Ltd, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, owns this e-commerce venture and has been developed under the guidance of Mahindra Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO) VS Parthasarathy.
    • Mr Parthasarathy has been named as the Chairman of this venture and Vijay S. Mahajan heads it. A small team of 10 people are involved in this project and more are expected to join soon

    Andhra Pradesh Government unveils ‘New Tourism Policy-2015- 20’

    • The Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled 'New Tourism Policy-2015-20' that envisages attracting Rs.10,000-crore investments and creating five lakh additional jobs over the next five years in the tourism sector
    • The policy aims to develop AP as one of the most preferred tourist destinations through sustained investments, robust infrastructure projects and services, and provide world-class tourist experience.
    • The policy has been framed with support from various government departments, industry experts, inputs from Indian School of Business and consultancy firm KPMG.

    Key facts of  'New Tourism Policy-2015-20' :-

    • Under the new policy, the TDP-led government has decided to set up a single desk for all tourism sector-related clearances, which would be provided within 21 days
    • The policy's objectives are to facilitate investments in the tourism sector to the tune of Rs.10,000 crore, raise its contribution to 7 per cent of the state GDP and create 5 lakh additional jobs by 2020
    • All projects with investment above Rs.200 crore, irrespective of the location, will be treated as mega tourism projects. Additional incentives and concessions on a case-to- case basis may be granted with nod from agencies concerned
    • 'New Tourism Policy-2015-20' provides for incentives like reduction in VAT (from 14 to 5 per cent), reimbursement of land registration charges, waiver of entertainment tax for three years and lower rate of electricity tariff, among others, for tourism plans
    • The government will set up two bodies - Green & Landscape Corporation and Swachh Andhra Corporation

    RBI, Nepal Rastra Bank ink MoU for supervisory information exchange

    • Reserve Bank of India has Inked an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nepal Rastra Bank on exchange of supervisory information 
    • The MoU was signed by Nepal Rastra Bank's Executive Director Narayan Prasad Paudel and RBI's Executive Director Meena Hemchandra at the central office of Reserve Bank 
    • The Reserve Bank has entered into Memorandum of Understanding, Letter for Supervisory Co-operation and Statement of Co-operation with supervisors of a few countries to promote greater co-operation and share supervisory information. 
    • By signing the MoU, RBI is seeking to promote greater co-operation and share supervisory information among the authorities. So far RBI has signed 27 such MoUs, one Letter for Supervisory Co-operation (LSC) and one Statement of Co-operation (SoC) in this regard.
