  • Rakesh Sahni appointed as chairman of NVDA
    • Madhya Pradesh government has appointed former Chief Secretary Rakesh Sahni as the Chairman of Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) 
    • Rakesh Sahni is an 1972 batch IAS officer and retired from the post of chief secretary he has also served as the Chairman of MP Electricity Regulatory Commission

    About Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) :-

    • Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) was formed by the government of MP in 9 August 1985. NVDA oversees all major development projects in the Narmada Basin.Narmada River is the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh.
    • With 87% of its catchment area lying in Madhya Pradesh so it becomes important for the state to exploit this enormous water resource

  • Ajay Kumar Pandey appointed as MD and group CEO of GIFT City
    • Ajay Kumar Pandey has been appointed as the new MD & Group CEO of  Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Ltd (GIFT)
    • Pandey will take over the charge from Ramakant Jha who was  associated with GIFT City project since November 2009. Jha will move to Mumbai as CEO of IL&FS's Smart City initiative 
    • Ajay Kumar Pandey has three decades of global and domestic experience in the field of telecommunications and has worked in senior management positions in Tata Telecommunications 

    Facts about GIFT City :-

    • It is an under-construction central business district in the Indian state of Gujarat. Which will be built on 886 acres (3.59 km2) of land.
    • GIFT is Joint Venture Company of Gujarat Urban Development Company Limited (GUDCOL) and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS).
    • The main purpose of  GIFT is to provide high quality physical infrastructure (electricity, water, gas, district cooling, roads, telecoms and broadband) so that finance and tech firms can relocate their operations there from Mumbai, Bangalore, Gurgaon etc. where infrastructure is either inadequate or very expensive
    • GIFT will have a special economic zone (SEZ), international education zone, integrated townships, an entertainment zone, hotels, a convention center, an international techno park, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) units, shopping malls, stock exchanges and service units.

  • Krishnapatnam Port bags Golden Peacock award for environment management

    Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh has received the Golden Peacock environment management award for its initiatives and achievements in the field of environment.The award was presented by Union Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar to C Sasidhar, Managing Director (Krishnapatnam Port) on Saturday at the17th World Congress on Environment Management

    Initiatives taken by the Krishnapatnam Port:-

    • Krishnapatnam Port planted over 20 lakhs trees within the port and more than 50,000 trees in the surrounding villages
    • Installation of solar lights in the port and solar water heaters in the employee colony
    • It also established gas connections for villagers so as to discourage them from cutting of mangroves
    • Krishnapatnam Port adopted Nellore town traffic islands and public buildings for maintaining greenery around the areas etc
    • The port has adopted Environment Health and Security program that encourages continuous improvement in environment protection and includes - waste management, pollution control, resource conservation, use of renewable resources e.t.c

  • Maharashtra assembly clears right to services bill

    Maharashtra legislative assembly has unanimously passed Maharashtra Guarantee of Public Services Act, popularly known as Right to Services, to improve transparency and delivery of services to citizens from the government machinery. 

    Key points of the Bill :-

    •  Right to Services, grant its citizens the right to sue government officials for failing to meet deadlines set for delivering a slew of services.
    •  The Act includes a penalty for default on part of the government employee, which ranges between Rs 500 and Rs 5,000.
    • About 10 government departments have notified a total of 110 services that would be provided under the Maharashtra Guarantee of Public Services bill 
    • It provides for three-tier Appellate Authorities with first two being Government Officials or Designated Officers and third will be a Right to Service Commission

  • Iran reaches historic nuclear deal

    Finally after an arduous talks that spanned 20 months Iran, the United States, and five other world powers clinched a comprehensive long-term deal with Iran that will prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon

    Background of the deal :-

    In 2006, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1696 and imposed sanctions after Iran refused to suspend its uranium enrichment program the sanction had slashed the oil exports of OPEC’s fifth-largest producer by a quarter and choked its economy completely, Over the years, sanctions have taken a serious toll on Iran's economy and people but now the deal could give Iran access to billions in frozen assets and oil revenue, stave off more U.S. military action in the Middle East and reshape the tumultuous region.

    • The deal involves limiting Iran's nuclear production for 10 years and Tehran's access to nuclear fuel and equipment for 15 years in return for hundreds of millions of dollars in sanctions relief
    • However, the sanctions would not be lifted until Iran proves to the International Atomic Energy Agency that it has met its obligations under the deal.
    • The agreement includes the provision of a "snap back" mechanism that could lead to the re-enforcemnet of sanctions within 65 days if Iran violates the deal
    • Tehran will slash by around two-thirds the number of centrifuges from around 19,000 to 6,104,
