  • HS Brahma is going to be the next and 19th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India.  
    • The appointment follow the well-established tradition of promoting the senior-most Election Commissioner as the CEC.
    • He replaces VS Sampath who demits office today having served a prolific 6-year long tenure.
    • He will just get a 3-month odd tenure before attaining the retiring age of 65 on April 19. 
    • He is only the second CEC from the northeast after JM Lyndogh.
  • Centre set up a 3-member Commission on Denotified and Nomadic Tribes for 3 years.  
    • The terms of reference of the panel include preparation of a state-wise list of castes belonging to Denotified and Nomadic Tribes and suggest appropriate measures in respect of Denotified and Nomadic Tribes to be undertaken by the central and state governments. 
    • Bhiku Ramji Idate will be the Chairperson of the panel.
  • Petroleum Sports Promotion Board rules the roost in national table tennis championship; lifts both the men's as well as women's trophy.  
    • They beat West Bengal in both the categories with identical 3-0 margin at the 76th edition of the tournament.
  • India-Rwanda relations: Kalraj Mishra, MSME minister, will dedicate 'Rapid Incubation Centre' in the fields of food processing, light engineering and vocational trades to Rwanda.  
    • The centre has been established by NSIC under India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-II). Rwanda`s economy is based mostly on subsistence agriculture and its manufacturing sector is dominated by the production of import substitutes for internal consumption. 
    • India has also been providing vocational training in the poor African country for years.
  • India's Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission) is honoured with the 2015 Space Pioneer Award in the science and engineering category from the US based National Space Society (NSS).

    • The unique film festival - Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival (VKIFF) - is organizing its 9th edition beginning January 16 in Pune, Maharashtra.
    • Its the nation's only film event dedicated to critically analysing environmental issues.
    • As many as 140 films from 25 countries, including UK, Brazil, Canada and China will be screened.
    • The festival, with topical theme 'Zero Waste: Begins with Us', will also feature allied activities like waste disposal drives and seminars.
