    Renowned Mohiniyattam dancer Kalamandalam Satyabhama passed away


    Kalamandalam Satyabhama a Mohiniyattam dancer, teacher and choreographer passed away in Palakkad district of Kerala. She was 77.

    Satyabhama  was regarded as a matriarch of the classical dance " Mohiniyattam " and was well-known for her experimental reforms in this classical dance form which marked a crucial phase in preserving and reinventing Mohiniyattam.

    About Kalamandalam Satyabhama 

    • Satyabhama was born in 1937, Satyabhama learnt dance at a very early age under the tutelage of Kalamandalam Achutha Warrier and Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Warrier. Satyabhama debut performance was in front of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
    • She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014 and the first Swati Tirunal Puraskaram by Kollam Kathakali Club and Troupe in 2006. In 1994, she bagged the Leel Kendra Sangeeta Akademi award.
    • Kalamandalam Satybhama was the first woman Vice Principal of Kerala Kalamandalam and, later, became its Principal till she retired in 1992.
    • Satyabhama has published a treatise on Mohiniyattam in Malayalam, by name, "Mohiniyattam - History, Techniques and Performance"

    What is "Mohiniyattam" ?

    • Mohiniyattam is a classical dance form from Kerala, which is believed to have originated in 16th century. It is one of the eight Indian classical dance forms recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. It is perfomed by women. 
    • The word Mohini means a maiden who steals the heart of the onlooker. It is thought that Vaishnava devotees gave the name of Mohiniattam to this dance form.
    • The vocal music of Mohiniyattam involves variations in rhythmic structure known as chollu and the lyrics are mixture of Sanskrit and Malayalam.

    The 2015 US Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It is the 135th edition of the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year. It takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

    2015 US Open Men's Singles Title :-

    • The 28-year-old world number Djokovic won his second US Open title and 10th Grand Slam crown with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Roger Federer.
    • The win left the world's top two players who have played each other 42 times with a perfectly even split of 21 wins apiece. The win gave Djokovic his third Grand Slam title of the year

    2015 US Open Men’s Doubles Title :-

    • French pair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut won the Men’s Doubles trophy of the US Open. In the final match, they defeated, Jamie Murray (United Kingdom) and John Peers (Australia) pair by 6–4, 6–4 score.

    2015 US Open Women’s Singles Title :-

    • Italy’s Flavia Pennetta has lifted the Women’s Singles trophy of the US Open after defeating Roberta Vinci (Italy) in straight sets 7-6 and 6-2.
    • With this victory she became the first Italian US Open champion and it was also her maiden US Grand Slam title. It was also her fourth and final Grand Slam of the season and she is only the second Italian woman to win a tennis major Grand Slam titles.

    2015 US Open Women’s Doubles Title :-

    • Sania Mirza (India) and Martina Hingis (Switzerland) pair won the Switzerland women’s Doubles trophy of the US Open. In the final match, they defeated, Casey Dellacqua (Australia) and Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan) pair by 6–3, 6–3 score. 
    • It was their fourth title of this season after winning Wimbledon Championship, BNP Paribas Open and WTA Family Circle Cup doubles title earlier.
    • For Hingis it was her second US Open doubles title coming 17-years after she won her first in 1998 with Jana Novotna

    2015 US Open Mixed Doubles Title :-

    • Leander Paes (India) and Martina Hingis (Switzerland) pair won the Mixed Doubles trophy of Final Grand Slam of the US Open. In the summit clash 4th seeded Indo-Swiss pair defeated American pair of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. 
    • It was their third title of this season after winning Australian Open and Wimbledon Championship earlier.

    Grand Slam wheelchair title :-

    • Britain's Jordanne Whiley won her first Grand Slam singles title by beating her doubles partner Yui Kamiji by 6-4 0-6 6-1 in the US Open women's wheelchair final.
    • Briton Gordon Reid, 23, won his second Grand Slam title by pairing with France's Stephane Houdet to clinch the men's wheelchair doubles.

    • The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), London has conferred G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, with the Society's 2015 Silver Medal for work contributing to major advances or contributions in aerospace.
    • Mr Reddy is the first Defence scientist working in India to be honoured with the prestigious "Silver Medal" of the Society. His pioneering contributions in promoting Aerospace and Aeronautics in India were also acknowledged. 
    • He was given this medal in recognition of his contributions as one of the leading navigation and avionics experts, under whose leadership India has developed state-of-the-art avionics sensors and systems for key national strategic programmes and other defence applications.

    The Royal Aeronautical Society :-

    • The Royal Aeronautical Society, established in 1866, has been honouring outstanding achievers in the global aerospace industry since 1909, when Wilbur and Orville Wright came to London to receive the Society’s first Gold Medal. Honouring world aerospace achievers has become a permanent tradition of the Society.

    • Bilateral Maritime Exercise between India and Australia 'AUSINDEX-15', commenced off coast of Visakhapatnam. The week-long drill was inaugurated by Head, Navy Capability, Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Rear Admiral Jonathan Mead and Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet Rear Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh onboard the INS Shivalik.
    • In this Bilateral Maritime Exercise Royal Australian Navy (RAN) comprises of HMAS Sirius (fleet tanker), HMAS Arunta (Anzac class frigate) and one submarine HMAS Sheean (Collins class submarine) while Indian Navy would be represented by INS Shivalik (stealth frigate), INS Ranvijay (guided missile destroyer) and INS Shakti (fleet tanker)
    • In addition, one Royal Australian air force P3C orion surveillance aircraft and Indian Navy's P8I maritime patrol aircraft will operate from Chennai during the exercise
    • AUSINDEX15 naval exercise between navies of both countries is held in line with the Framework for Security Co-operation. The framework was announced by the Australian and Indian Prime Ministers in 2014.

    • Indian Wrestler Narsingh Pancham Yadav secured an Olympic quota place for India after bagging a bronze medal in the Men's 74kg Freestyle category at the World Wrestling Championship held at Las Vegas, United States
    • With this third-place finish, Narsingh also became the lone Indian to win a medal at the prestigious tournament as well as book a berth for the 2016 Rio Games.

    Rajasthan first state to submit Annual Action Plan under Atal Mission (AMRUT)


    • Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to submit State Annual Action Plan under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) targeting universal coverage in respect of water supply connections and sewerage connections to all urban households in the state.
    • The State Government has proposed projects under these two categories worth Rs.1,087 cr for approval by the Union Urban Development Ministry during the current financial year. 
    • In this regard, state government has proposed projects under these two categories worth 1,087 crore rupees to be taken up in 13 of the 28 AMRUT cities in Rajasthan.
    • These cities have been identified by the state government after analysing the gaps in coverage in respect of household water supply connections and sewerage network services.They were identified in line with the principles of prioritization suggested in the Mission Guidelines
    • For the first time in the country, formulation of urban development plans including identification of projects, their appraisal and approval has been delegated to the States and Rajasthan has become the first state to act under this new architecture.

    • India's third-largest tyre maker JK Tyre Industries will acquire BK Birla flagship firm Kesoram Industries' tyre manufacturing plant at Haridwar for up to Rs 2,200 crore. 
    • The acquisition move will help JK Tyre to enter in to the two and three wheeler market besides strengthening its position as top market leader in the trucks and bus business in India.
    • JK Tyres' capacity will go up by 27 per cent to 25.4 million tyres post the acquisition of the Haridwar plant. Kesoram will use funds to pay back debt; the company has an estimated debt of Rs 3,800 crore. Kesoram Industries has been reporting losses due to high interest cost.

    • Paytm is planning to launch India’s first payments bank by the end of this financial year and is counting on its mobile wallet experience to give it a clear advantage over established business houses that will be its main rivals. 
    • Paytm claims that there are 100 million users in India who use its mobile wallet and expects that to touch 150 million by March 2016  
    • Paytm expects to touch Rs 10,000 crore in deposits in the next three years, building on existing consumer base and technological and costefficient set up, 
    • It should be noted that Paytm, the youngest licensee, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel,Vodafone, Aditya Birla Nuvo, Sun Pharma, Fino PayTech, Tech Mahindra, National Securities Depository, Cholamandalam Finance and India Post were among the 42 applicants that got approval for starting payments banks 
    • These entities will take deposits, convey remittances and dispense payments to recipients, making them ideal for migrant workers who need to send money home

    China builds museum in honour of 1st nuke, space scientists


    • China has built a museum to commemorate those who made the country's first hydrogen bomb and satellites in the 1960s and early 1970s
    • Located on the Huairou campus of CAS University - some 60 kms from Beijing, the museum is housed at the site of the Academy's former rocket test base founded in 1958. It is the first time some researchers have had their contributions and names revealed publicly.
    • The base was used to develop ground test operations for high-energy liquid propellants and engines for long-range rockets. China detonated its first hydrogen bomb in 1967, a little more than two-and-a-half years after the country's first atomic bomb test. 
    • More than 17,000 researchers participated in the "two bombs, one satellite" project, which helped increase China's scientific and defence capabilities and contributed to growth in national strength.

    FSSAI proposes new rules for nutraceuticals, ayurvedic products


    • To check mis-labelling of 'health supplements', Food safety watchdog, FSSAI has come out with gazetted regulations proposing to ban the sale of such products as 'medicines'.
    • It has also framed rules for products based on ayurveda, sidhha, unani and other traditional health systems and called for fixing of permissible limits of various ingredients used in products, which are based on traditional health systems.
    • As per a draft order issued by FSSAI "Every package of food or health supplements shall carry the information on the label... the words FOOD or HEALTH SUPPLEMENT... the term 'NOT FOR MEDICINAL USE' shall be prominently written on the label,"
    • Under the new regulations proposed by the FSSAI companies can not claim that their nutraceuticals and health supplement products are for therapeutic and curative purposes 
    • FSSAI has also proposed the maximum usage levels for cow's milk, buffalo's milk, camel's milk, ghee, curd, butter, honey, gold, gold foil, silver, pearl in ayurveda, siddha and unani ingredients based products. The regulator will finalise these regulations after receiving comments from all stakeholders on the draft note. 
    • FSSAI said that the benefits of speciality foods containing ingredients based on ayurveda, unani and siddha and other traditional health systems of India, should be shown by science based evidence. 
    • According to a knowledge paper released by Assocham about 60-70 per cent supplements in the nutraceuticals market, which has potential to grow to USD 12.2 billion in the next five years, are fake and such unregistered and unapproved products should be recalled. 
  • SpiceJet becomes first commercial airliner to make night landing at Port Blair      



    • SpiceJet became India’s first carrier to successfully carry out night landing at the Veer Savarkar International Airport at Port Blair. The civilian airliner flew in from Kolkata to the Port Blair airport at 6.10 pm, fifty minutes after sunset. This landmarking achievement has paved the way for similar flight movements after sunset. 
    • The aircraft later departed for Kolkata at 6.45 pm as SG-261, thereby completing a cycle of landing and take-off from the Port Blair airport during the night time.The first night landing was allowed after a thorough safety risk assessment was conducted.
    • The SpiceJet flight was commanded by Capt. Gurcharan Arora and Capt. Ranbir Singh and the 212-seater Boeing 737-900ER aircraft VT-SLD was greeted upon arrival by a grand water cannon salute, an aviation tradition to mark key milestones.
    • The upgrade of the airport has been carried out by the Andaman and Nicobar administration, with support from the Civil Aviation Ministry, Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Andaman and Nicobar Command and Airports Authority of India
