  • Tenth World Hindi Conference begins in Bhopal



    • 10th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan (World Hindi Conference) has begun in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh with the theme of Hindi Jagat-Vistar and Sambhavnaye.
    • The three-day conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi it will see the participation of scholars and lovers of the language from nearly 40 countries discussing issues like Hindi in administration, foreign policy and law during the event
    • The decision to hold the tenth edition in India was taken at Johannesburg, the venue of the ninth conference.An exhibition showcasing assimilation of Hindi with modern techniques also has been set up at the conference venue.
    • External Affairs Ministry, is the main organizer of the event which is hosting the event in partnership with the state Government of Madhya Pradesh.

    World Hindi Conference :-

    • First World Hindi Conference was held from 10 to 12 January 1975 in Nagpur and inagurated by then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. Since then every year 10th January is being observed as the World Hindi Day.
    • First World Hindi Conference was inaugurated  by then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, then Prime Minister of Mauritius attended conference as the Chief guest. 122 delegates from 30 countries participated in the conference.
    • Ninth World Hindi Conference held from September 22 to September 24, 2012 in Johannesburg, South Africa
  • 2015 Singapore General Elections: ruling party wins elections, returns to power



    • In recently concluded 2015 Singapore General Elections, People’s Action Party (PAP) led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has emerged victorious.
    • Singapore's prime minister Lee Hsien Loong  lauded the city-state's youth vote for helping return his party to power in a massive victory for the 12th time since independence a half-century ago.
    • Results showed the PAP had secured 83 of 89 seats, winning nearly 70% of the ballots cast. The party has won every election since independence in 1965.
    • The results shows improvement over the 2011 vote for the PAP, when it took 80 of the 87 seats but saw its share of votes drop to an all-time low of 60%.
    • About 2.46 million people out of a population of 5.47 million were eligible to vote, up from 2.35 million in 2011. The turnout was 93.56% among 2.46 million voters.
    • With this victory, ruling party PAP has secured their 14th consecutive term in office since independence of city-state in 1965. 2015 Singapore General Elections was country’s first election after the death of its founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

    Parliamentary Elections in Singapore:-

    • The parliament of  Singapore has maximum term of five years after that it must be dissolved by the President and elections must be held within three months.
    • Polling day at a general election is a public holiday, and voting is compulsory,  polling stations are open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Voters must go to the polling stations assigned to them.

  • PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi ranks second in Fortune's powerful women in business list 



    PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi is the sole Indian-origin executive in 2015 edition of Fortune’s list of 50 Most Powerful Women in Business. India-born Nooyi is ranked 2nd on the list, moving up a notch from her third position last year. 

    This edition of Fortune's powerful women in business list was topped by General Motors CEO Mary Barra. She heads United States largest auto-maker and it is her second year as head.

    The list also includes :-

    • Third rank: Ginni Rometty , CEO, IBM  
    • Fourth rank: Marillyn Hewson, CEO, Chairman and President of Lockheed Martin
    • Fifth rank: Ellen Kullman, CEO and Chairman of DuPont
    • Sixth  rank: Abigail Johnson, CEO and President of Fidelity Investments.
    • Seventh  rank: Meg Whitman, CEO, Chairman and President of Hewlett-Packard (HP).
    • Eight  rank: Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook
    • Ninth  rank: Irene Rosenfeld, CEO and Chairman of Mondelez International
    • Tenth  rank: Phebe Novakovic, CEO and Chairman of General Dynamics.

  • India, Pakistan agree to maintain peace along the border, after DG level talks  



    • India and Pakistan on Thursday began a three-day DG-level border dialogue. A 16-member Pakistani delegation on Thursday reached the BSF headquarters for the talks that are being held between India and Pakistan after a gap of over one-and-a-half years.
    • The last such meeting between the two sides took place in 2013 when BSF DG Subhash Joshi led a delegation to Pakistan. Since then, as tension escalated on the border, no meetings have taken place 
    • Director General (DG) Border Security Force (BSF) D K Pathak is leading 23 member Indian delegation and his counterpart Major General Umar Farooq Burki, DG  of Pakistan Rangers (Punjab) is leading a 16 members Pakistani delegation.
    • It should be noted that both the delegations also have representatives from respective Home and Foreign ministries along with officers from narcotics control and survey department.
    • In an effort to take their strained relationship forward, India and Pakistan agreed to maintain peace along the border and  open more channels of communication for resolving all issues of utmost importance between the two sides and increase bilateral engagements
  • Sebi ordered defreezing of bank, demat accounts of Gemini Communications



    • SEBI has ordered defreezing of bank and securities accounts of Gemini Communication after it recovered pending dues of over Rs. 11 lakh.The dues included interests, all costs, charges and expenses 
    • In an order, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said it has recovered Rs 11,30,534 from Gemini Communications towards full and final settlement of dues 
    • It should be noted that last week, SEBI had ordered to attach the bank and demat accounts of the company to recover the penalties imposed for violation of capital market norms.
    • SEBI has also directed the banks to provide details of all the accounts of the firm as well as loan and advances made by the company.
  • Indian-Origin Boy Sweeps Australian Spelling Bee Contest



    • Anirudh Kathirvel, a nine-year-old Indian-origin boy became the  Australia's new spelling champion after he won 'The Great Australian Spelling Bee' competition.
    • Anirudh, born in Melbourne to a Tamilian couple won 50,000 dollars education scholarship along with an impressive 10,000 dollars' worth goods for his school.
    • Anirudh, parents Prithiviraj and Sujatha migrated to Australia from Tamil Nadu 16 years ago. Anirudh started reading from the age of two and slowly his passion evolved into my love for words. His parents encouraged and helped him to build on his spellings 

    About spelling bee :-

    • A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty.
    • The concept is thought to have originated in the United States and spelling bee events, along with variants, are now also held in some other countries around the world
    • The first winner of an official spelling bee was Frank Neuhauser, who won the 1st National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in 1925 at age eleven
  • Water policy expert Ramaswamy Iyer died



    • Renowned water policy expert Ramaswamy R. Iyer passed away on 9 September 2015 following a severe bout of viral fever in New Delhi. He was 86.
    • Iyer was instrumental in drafting India’s first National Water Policy in 1987 and was known for producing a rich body of commentary on water policy and  environmental issues
    • His last held position was that of an honorary research professor at the Centre for Policy Research here. Prior to that, as an officer of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Mr. Iyer served as Secretary of Water Resources in the central government 
    • Ramaswamy R. Iyer was born in October 1929 in Thakkalai, Tamil Nadu.
  • BSNL plans to launch 4G services by March



    • State run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to unveil cheaper tariff plans by the end of this year and launch full-fledged 4G services by March 2016. BSNL plans to launch competitive tariff plans to match Reliance Jio and other private telecom service providers
    • BSNL will close watch Jio, which has announced launch of 4G services by the end of the year, and it will use airwaves in 2500 Mhz band to launch competitively priced 4G services at select locations before the end of current fiscal
    • Ambani led  Jio, in addition to pan-India BWA spectrum in 2300 MHz band, has acquired airwaves in 800MHz and 1800MHz in the recently-concluded auctions and plans to launch services around December at tariffs ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 500 per month.
