Bharti Airtel’s payments Bank gets final RBI nod
Bharti Airtel's payments bank venture "Airtel M Commerce Services Ltd" has become the first entity to receive final approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to start a payments bank.
Most of the players who received the payments licences are yet to apply for the final licences. Airtel M Commerce is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, a telecom company.
Private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank has upto 19.9 per cent stake in Airtel M Commerce.The payments banks are not allowed to lend. Hence, a tie-up with banks will help them source loans for their customers.
Some of the other players that have received such differentiated licences are Vodaphone m-pesa, Tech Mahindra, Reliance Industries, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of the mobile wallet Paytm, and Fino Pay Tech, among others.>Login To Save for Revision
- Tiger numbers show increase for first time in a century
For the first time in a century, the global wild tiger population has increased, as per the data revealed by The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Global Tiger Forum, approximately 3,890 tigers had been counted in the latest global census which is up from 3,200 in the year 2010. In the year 1900, there were 100,000 tigers.
Currently, the majority of the Tigers are in India, followed by Russia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. India alone has more than half the world's tigers, at 2,226 in the latest estimate.
The census was released ahead of 3rd Asia Ministerial Conference on the Tiger Conservation which is being hosted by the WWF and the Global Tiger Forum in New Delhi.>Login To Save for Revision
- Hiroshima Declaration: G7 leaders call for 'world without nuclear weapons'
US Secretary of State John Kerry and G7 foreign ministers have issued Hiroshima Declaration that calls for a world without nuclear weapons.
The G7 statement came as ministers wrap up their final day of meetings with discussions focused on global hotspot issues including terrorism and other security threats as well as instability in the Middle East and the refugee crisis.
G-7 Countries :
It is a group of seven major advanced economies as reported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Collectively they represent more than 64% of the net global wealth; they have very high Human Development Index and they represent 46% of the global GDP.
G7 countries includes- Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and US.
The group has its origins in the Group of Six or G6 formed in 1975. It then changed to the G7 in 1976 with the addition of Canada, and to the G8 with Russia joining in 1998.
In 2014, Russia was excluded from the group over the Ukrainian crisis. The European Union has participated in the summit since the 1980s.
Background : The Hiroshima declaration comes as some of the G7 member states including the US and Britain possess huge nuclear stockpiles. Nuclear weapons states have refused to destroy or reduce their stocks of nuclear weapons despite repeated promises to do so. - Maharashtra's IPS officer Meeran Borwankar appointed DG of BPR&D
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minster Narendra Modi has appointed Maharashtra cadre IPS officer Meeran C Borwankar as the Director General (DG) in the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) till the date of her superannuation, i.e. 30th September 2017.
Ms. Borwankar is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1981 batch of Maharashtra cadre. She is presently working in her cadre state Maharashtra. In her long career, Borwankar has also worked in Maharashtra's anti-terrorism squad (ATS).

- Danny Willett wins US Masters 2016
Danny Willett, professional golfer from England has won his first major championship at the 2016 Masters Tournament, becoming the first European golfer to win the Masters since 1999, and the first from England since Nick Faldo’s similar win in 1996.
Score card :
Danny Willett made a score of 283 (-5) and three strokes ahead of runners-up Lee Westwood (UK) and the defending champion Jordan Spieth (US).
Defending champion Spieth had led by five shots as he had approached the 10th but later he dropped six shots in three holes. He tied for second spot with Lee Westwood.

- Khadija Ismayilova to receive UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016
Investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova of Azerbaijan has been for the UNESCO or Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016. The Prize will be awarded during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day 3 May 2016 hosted by Finland.
An independent international jury of media professionals recommended Ismayilova in recognition of her outstanding contribution to press freedom in difficult circumstances.
Khadija Ismayilova is a freelance journalist and contributor to the Azerbaijani service of Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty.
In September 2015, she was sentenced to seven and a half years’ imprisonment on charges of embezzlement and tax evasion.
UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize
(1) The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was established in 1997 by UNESCO’s Executive Board in honour of Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza.
(2) The award honours a person, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.
(3) The prize is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, the editor of the Colombian newspaper El Espectador, who was murdered in Bogotá on 17 December 1986 in front of the offices of his newspaper.>Login To Save for Revision
- 12 April: International Day of Human Space Flight
Every year 12th April is celebrated as the International Day of Human Space Flight to commemorate the date of the first manned space flight in the history of mankind. On April 12, 1961, Soviet citizen Yuri Gagarin undertook first successful first human space flight.
This historic event opened the way for space exploration for the benefit of all humanity. In Russia and some other former USSR countries, this historic day is celebrated as Cosmonautics Day. 2016 is the 55th anniversary of First Human Space Flight.
The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/65/271 of 7 April 2011, declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight .
The day seeks to celebrate each year at the international level the beginning of the space era for mankind, reaffirming the important contribution of space science and technology in achieving sustainable development goals and increasing the well-being of States and peoples, as well as ensuring the realization of their aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes.
