  • Poet, freedom fighter Kayyara Kinhanna Rai died at the age of 101



    Renowned Kannada poet freedom fighter, teacher, and journalist Kayyara Kinhanna Rai died at his residence at Badiyadkka in Kasaragod district of Kerala. He was 101.He leaded the fight for the right of linguistic minorities of Kasargod and championed the cause of unifying the Kannada-speaking areas of Kasargod with Karnataka. Mr. Rai founded Kasaragod Vileenekarana Kriya Samiti to fight for the cause.

     Famous works of  Kayyara Kinhanna Rai

    • As a journalist he contributed his writings to newspapers like Swabhimana, Madras Mail and The Hindu
    • As a writer and poet who has written books on theatre, grammar and children some of his famous poems are Shreemukha, Aikyagana, Punarnava, Chethana and Koraga
    • His other important works are Malayala Sahitya Charithre (History of Malayalam literature),which is a translation of an original work by P. K. Parameshwaran Nair and Sahithya Drushti
    • He also chaired the 66th Akhila Kannada Sahitya Sammelana which was held at Mangalore.

    • He was honoured with Karnataka Sahitya Academy award in 1969
    • National Award for Best Teacher in the same year
    • Honorary Fellowship by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (1970)
    • Pejawar Award in literature in 2004, Alva's Nudisri Award in 2005
    • Adarsha Ratna Award in 2006, Nadoja (Teacher of the State) 
    • Award in 2006, Karnataka Ekikarana (Unification) Award in 2007
    • The first Karnataka Gadinada Ratna Award 
    • Pampa Award in 2014 on his 99th birthday
  • India is the world's largest beef exporter



    • India has been the largest exporter of beef in the world since last year and even this year it retains its top spot as the world’s largest exporter of beef ccording to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has further widened its lead over second-ranked Brazil with a projected total of 2.4 million tons exported in 2015 against Brazil’s 2 million.
    • The buffalo trade has been growing rapidly and now earns India more export dollars than basmati rice.That's because India exports large quantities of meat from water buffalo which is a member of the bovine family classified as beef by the USDA.
    • Data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) shows that most of India’s buffalo meat exports go to Asian countries and the Middle East, where rising wealth is spurring demand among diners for animal protein. Asia receives more than 80 per cent, while Africa takes around 15 per cent. Within Asia, Vietnam is the largest recipient, at 45 per cent.
    • India’s buffalo meat exports have been growing at an average of nearly 14 per cent each year since 2011, and fetching India as much as $4.8 billion in 2014.
  • Goa Tourism Minister D Parulekar conferred with PATWA 2015 award



    • Goa Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar has been awarded with the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) - Safari India South Asia Travel Award 2015.
    • Dilip Parulekar got this award under the category of Best Tourism Minister and with this he became the first tourism minister of Goa to receive this prestigious award.

    Initiatives taken by Dilip Parulekar :-

    • Launch of srevices such as the Hot Air Balloons, Amphibious vessels, Seaplanes, Women Taxi Service and Comprehensive Beach Cleaning Management Plan. 
    • Safety on the beach belt has been augmented through the lifeguard services and IRB patrolling, and other safety measures strengthened. 
    • Tourism infrastructure has also been augmented and new facilities such as parking, changing rooms, toilet and locker facilities.
  • BHEL commissions 500 MW thermal unit at Vindhyachal STPS



    • Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commissioned a 500 MW Unit-13 of Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Station (STPS), Stage-V of NTPC.The project is located in Vindhyanagar in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh.
    • It should be noted that  BHEL has earlier commissioned six units of 500 MW rating each, at Vindhyachal power station.With the commissioning of this unit, BHEL has now commissioned seven sets of 500 MW each aggregating to 3,500 MW, the highest by BHEL in a power project
    • In this ambitious project BHEL had contributed in design, engineering, manufacture, supply and erection besides, commissioning of steam generator and steam turbine generator along with associated auxiliaries, controls and instrumentation, 
    • Equipment for the project was manufactured at BHEL’s Trichy, Ranipet, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Bhopal plants, while the company’s power sector-western region undertook erection and commissioning of the equipment.
    • BHELmainly makes sets of 500 MW rating class and has commissioned so far 76 sets in the country thus forming the backbone of Indian power sector 
    • BHEL has established itself in the power industry by delivering higher rated units such as 600 MW, 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW thermal sets with a high degree of indigenisation.

    Super Thermal Power Stations (STPS)

    • Super Thermal Power Stations (STPS) or Super Power Station are a series of ambitious power projects planned by the Government of India.The STPS were started by Government of India in the 1990s, but met with limited success
    • India being a country of chronic power deficits, the Government of India has planned to provide 'power for all' by the end of the eleventh plan..The capacity of thermal power is 1000 MW and above
    • Ramagundam Super Thermal Power Station, one of the biggest thermal power stations in India, is a coal based power station situated at Jyothinagar in Karimnagar District.
  • Annual festival of ethnic Lepcha tribe of Sikkim "Tendong Lho Rum Faat" celebrated



    • An annual festival of  Lepcha tribe of Sikkim which is popularly known as Tendong Lho Rum Faat (Prayer of the Tendong Mountain) was celebrated with traditional devotion and fanfare on 9 August 2015. Tendong Lho Rum Faat  is one of the oldest festivals of the Lepchas and annually celebrated  in the month of July-August.
    • It is three day festival and on the first day the tribe worships the Mount Tendong, which, according to the folklore, is the saviour for them. The Lepchas, said to be the aboriginals of the State, are worshippers of nature.
    • According to the folklore, their ancestors went atop the Tendong Mountain to escape from 40 days and 40 nights of continuous rain. This festival commemorates that happening.
    • During the festival various cultural and literary programmes are held in the state to commemorate the occasion and finally on the concluding day, traditional Lepcha food, ornaments and costumes are displayed.
  • Ram Nath Kovind, Acharya Dev Vrat appointed as Governors of Bihar and HP respectively



    President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed senior BJP leader Ram Nath Kovind  as the new Governor of Bihar and Acharya Dev Vrat as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. The appointments will take effect from the dates the incumbents assume charge of their respective offices.

    About Ram Nath Kovind:-

    • Ram Nath Kovind had been a two-time Rajya Sabha member between 1994 and 2006, hails from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
    • His appointment comes barely few months ahead of the Assembly elections due in Bihar. West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi was holding additional charge of Bihar
    • Kovind is a lawyer by profession, Kovind had also been BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha chief and forme president of  the All India Koli Samaj.He has served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh for two terms from 1994-2000 and 2000-06.

    About Acharya Dev Vrat:-

    • Acharya Dev Vrat is a non-political social worker and educationist. He is a Arya Samaj pracharak and is a Principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra in Haryana.
    • He has done his B.Ed and post graduation in History from Kurukhetra University and is a diploma holder in Yogic science and a doctor of naturopathy and Yogic science.
    • Acharya Dev Vrat is  a recipient of American Medal of Honor awarded by American Biographical Institute for his selfless dedication to social causes

    Constitutional provisions related to governor

    • Article 153 of the Constitution requires that there shall be a Governor for each State and  one person can be appointed as Governor for two or more States
    • Article 154 vests the executive power of the State in the Governor
    • Article 155 says that “The Governor of a State shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal”
    • Article 156 provides that “The Governor shall hold office during the pleasure of the President” although the term of the Governor is prescribed as five years but President can terminate his service as governor at his pleasure
    • The only qualifications for appointment as Governor are that he should be a citizen of India and must have completed the age of thirty-five years. 
  •  Maharashtra Government inks MoU with Foxconn


    Maharashtra government has signed a MoU with the Tiawan-based Foxconn to set up its manufacturing facility in the state. Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the company and the State Government. Foxconn has chosen the state for being a financial centre, availability of quality talent and software-hardware integration facilities.

    About the MoU :-

    • Foxconn  will invest $five billion over the next five years in Maharashtra, which has given the Taiwan-based company 1,500 acres of land for its plant.
    • The deal is the the biggest single foreign direct investment (FDI) after BJP  took over the reins in the state.The facility in Maharashtra will focus on research and development as well as manufacturing. Foxconn will look for tie-ups with local partners for its presence in this state. Foxconn was looking at 10-12 manufacturing units in India and the cumulative investment is expected to be $2 billion.
    • Foxconn Technology Group chairman and CEO Terry Gou announced the company was bringing the entire supply chain to India and not looking just at assembling in India

    The state government has recently signed MoU with General Motors which announced investment of Rs. 6400 crores in Maharashtra on July 30, 2015.

    About Foxconn:-

    • Foxconn is a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturing company headquartered in Taiwan.
    • Foxconn is the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer and and the third-largest information technology company by revenue it makes devices for Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, Black Berry and Motorola.
    • Foxconn has been involved in several controversies relating to how it manages employees in China. There has been a history of suicides at its factories blamed on working conditions. In January 2012, about 150 Foxconn employees threatened to commit mass-suicide in protest at their working conditions
  • Union Government to allow Aadhaar enrolments of NRIs, PIOs, OICs


    • Government has decided that Aadhaar enrolment of Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizen of India to help them authenticate their identity digitally.
    • The move will authenticate that all persons on the Indian soil (Resident Indian, NRIs, OCI/PIO and visa holding visitors) shall be empowered with a unique identity/identifier that can authenticated on a digital platform any time anywhere,
    • Currently all residents including Indian national and foreigners with valid visas can be enrolled and provided Aadhaar number by the UIDAI but now it is working on the policy for Aadhaar enrolment of NRIs, PIOs and OICs after receiving a direction from the government on the issue.
    • The Aadhaar number helps in availing various services and benefits provided by the government. Aadhaar is a valid know your customers (KYC) document for various services including banking, telecom, cooking gas subsidy, vehicle registration driving licence, government scholarships, pension and public distribution system. 
    • UIDAI was earlier attached to Planning Commission of India and now it is attached to the NITI Aayog. So far it has allotted around 89.43 Aadhaar numbers to Indian citizens
  • Pramerica Mutual Fund  buys out Deutsche Mutual Fund  



    • Pramerica Mutual Fund has acquired the Indian asset management business of Deutsche Mutual Fund (India). This marks the fifth exit of a foreign asset management firm in two years.
    • Prior to this, Morgan Stanley MF, ING MF, Pinebridge Investments and Daiwa MF had shut their India fund management business. HDFC MF, Birla Sun Life MF, Kotak MF and SBI MF were the buyers respectively.
    • Deutsche MF was Rs 20,720 crore, making it the second-largest foreign fund house in India, after Franklin Templeton while Pramerica MF has 2,125 crore rupees AMU and after acquisition it will rise to 23,000 crore rupees making it among the top 15 Assets Management Companies in India
