  • Ahmed Maiteeg has been elected as Libya’s new Prime Minister after receiving 121 votes in the 200-member parliament.   
    • He won in the 2nd round of voting against political analyst Omar al-Hassi as the earlier session failed to give him the mandatory 120 votes.
  • Krishnaswamy Vijayraghavan, secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), has been elected as one of the 21 foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences (USNAS) this year.  
    • The membership is coveted recognition of the scientists for their significant achievements in original research.

    • Obaid Siddiqi, CNR Rao, Raghavendra Gadagkar, Madhav Gadgil, and Roddam Narasimha.
  • RV Verma becomes the Wholetime Member (Finance) of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).  
    • He has been appointed by the government for a 5-year period or till the age of 62, whichever is earlier. 
    • He is currently Chairman and Managing Director of National Housing Bank.
  • MN Vidyashankar has been appointed as the President of India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA).   
    • IESA is the trade body representing the Indian Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) industry since 2005.
  • Supreme Court asserts 25 percent reservation for poor kids in private schools.  - read more cat
  • Nobel Laureate economist Gary Becker passes away aged 93.  
    • He was honoured with the Nobel Prize in 1992 for using economics to analyse human behaviour and interaction topics such as crime (why people commit it), discrimination against minorities and family life.
