    DRDO sets up world’s Highest Terrestrial Research Centre in Ladakh

    • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has created another centre of excellence by establishing  the world’s highest terrestrial centre at Changla near Pengong lake in Ladakh.   
    • The centre dubbed as Extreme Altitude Research Centre is located at 17,600 feet above mean sea level and was inaugurated by Director General of DRDO Dr S Christopher.

    Key Facts :-

    • Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), Leh which is a constituent establishment of DRDO has established this Extreme Altitude Research Centre. The centre will serve as a natural cold storage for preserving rare and endangered medical plants for generations to come.
    • The centre will act as an important utility for research work in frontal areas of food and agriculture and bio-medical sciences for well being of the soldiers deployed in high altitude cold desert. 
    • Along with Life Sciences the centre, may provide unique opportunity to other labs and establishments of DRDO for testing and evaluation of electronics and communication devices,
    • It will serve as testing platform for various materials that can be used for high altitude applications, batteries, fuel cells, UAV's micro engines in extremecold conditions 17,600 feet above mean sea level.

  • Adani Ports inks MoU with L&T for Kattupalli Port Operations

    • Adani Ports and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have inked a MoU to oversee operations of Kattupalli Port in Tamil Nadu. The non-binding MoU will empower L&T Shipbuilding to manage and operate the port with an effect from October 2015.
    • Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone  (APSEZ)  is part of the Adani group led by Gautum Adani is one of India’s leading business houses with a revenue of over 10 billion dollars.
    • Adani shall be responsible for EBIDTA gains and losses arising from the port operation for this period while shipyard will continue to be managed and operated by L&T Shipbuilding.
    • Adani-led Adani group is likely to take over the operational and management control of L&T Kattupalli International Container Terminal near Chennai to strengthen its presence on the east cost.
    • APSEZ which is headquartered at Ahmedabad already operates the country’s busiest port at Mundra in Gujarat. It has got the nod from Kerala Govt. for developing the Rs 4,089-crore Vizhinjam International Deepwater Seaport project with 4-year timeframe for commissioning of the project.
    • At present, about one million TEUs of Indian cargo are getting trans-shipped through foreign ports like Colombo. Development of Vizhinjam port will help in cost saving to Indian trade as the boxes can be trans-shipped at a lower cost from Vizhinjam port.

    Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis win Wuhan Open women's doubles title

    • The top seeded pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis continued their magnificent form in 2015 by clinching their seventh doubles title of the year by winning the Wuhan Open women's doubles trophy.
    • The top-seeded pair defeated the Romanian duo of Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu by 6-2, 6-3 score in straight sets to win the doubles title at the Wuhan Open tennis tournament held in Wuhan (China) 
    • This was the seventh title that the Sania-Martina combination have won this year. The duo earlier had won the Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Charleston Opem, Wimbledon, US Open and Guangzhou Open in 2015 season.
    • This was also the Sania and Martina's second win over the Romanian pair this year. They had earlier defeated them 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome last May.
    • It should be noted that Sania's partnership with Martina has helped her become the first Indian women's player to take the top spot in the doubles rankings.
    • Venus Williams of United States has won the 2015 Wuhan Open Singles Title. In the title clash she defeated Garbine Muguruza of Spain and won 47th title win of her career.

    • Lawyer-turned-administrator Shashank Manohar has been elected unopposed as President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the second term.
    • Shashank Manohar belongs to Vidarbha Cricket Association and was elected by Special General Meeting (SGM) of BCCI. 
    • Election of  Shashank Manohar was necessitated by the sudden demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya, who had a short term of seven months after his election in March this year.
    • A BCCI by-election needs only one proposer from the zone which is electing the president and it was the East’s turn this time. Mr. Manohar got the nod from all the six associations and was the lone nomination at the end of the election deadline .
    • Shashank Manohar is known for his impeccable clean image and track record & integrity in cricketing circles.

    About Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) :-

    • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the national governing body for cricket in India and is considered as world’s richest cricket board.
    • The board was formed in December 1928 as a society, registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act.
    • BCCI is a consortium of state cricket associations and the state associations select their representatives who in turn elect the BCCI officials.
    • R E Grant Govan was elected as the first president of BCCI and Anthony de Mello was appointed as the first secretary of  BCCI
    • BCCI is the member of ICC and has authority to select players, umpires and officials to participate in international cricket events and exercises total control over them.

    • Renowned Telugu producer Edida Nageswara Rao passed away in Hyderabad, Telangana following old-age related ailments . He was 81
    • He was renowned face in Telugu Cinema (also known as Tollywood) for creating path breaking films. He owns the film production house Poornodaya Movie Creations.

    Facts about Edida Nageswara Rao :-

    • He was born on April 24, 1934 in Kotha Peta, East Godavari district of undivided Andhra Pradesh.
    • He was popular for his regular collaboration with legendary director K. Vishwanath. The duo worked together in six films.
    • He started his career as a theatre actor, film actor, dubbing artist and then ventured into film producing. He has produced films with a classical touch in the 1970s and 1980s. 
    • Some of the popular movies produced by him are Tayaramma Bangarayya (1979), Shankarabharanam (1979), Seetakoka Chiluka (1981), Sagarasangamam (1983), Sitara (1984), Swatimutyam (1986), Swayamkrushi (1987) and Apatbandhavudu (1991).
    • Most of the movies produced by him won the National Film Award for best feature film in Telugu category, Nandi Awards and were screened in several international film festivals.
    • These films were also dubbed & released in the Russian Language. He was also nominated for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award.
    • After getting retired from the film production, He has also worked as Telugu Film producer's Council Secretary, Nandi Awards Committee Chairman and National Film Award Committee member

    • Google has officially became subsidiary of new parent company Alphabet after US markets closed on 2 October 2015.
    • Google announced in August that it planned to reduce it's corporate structure by forming a new parent company called Alphabet to allow its different businesses to operate independently and move faster
    • Google's core business - which encompasses search, YouTube, and Android - will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet and will seperate from smaller units like the hardware maker Nest or "moonshot" factory Google X, which will be set up as their own companies under Alphabet as well. Each division will have its own CEO.
    • All of Google’s share of stock will be converted to the exact same number of Alphabet shares. The stock tickers for shares of Class C (GOOG) and Class A (GOOGL) stock will stay the same.

    Nepal turns to UN over ‘obstruction’ of trade point with India

    • Nepal has turned to the UN over alleged obstruction of a key border trade point with India that has resulted in acute shortage of essential goods. Nepal appealed to the international community to ensure that land- locked countries' freedom of transit is not curtailed. 
    • Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh, who led Nepal's delegation to the UN General Assembly, held talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and appealed to the world community to ensure effective and unhindered access to the sea for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) like Nepal through effective implementation of the Vienna Programme of Action for 2014-2024. 
    • However India has dismissed suggestions that it has imposed any embargo against the supplies to Nepal and has maintained that the obstruction was due to protest and unrest in that country as Indian companies and transporters fear for their safety and security. 

    Background :- 

    • Madhes Protesters opposing new Constitution have blocked key trade points with India due to which Hundreds of trucks with shipments including medicine, gasoline and cooking fuel had been stranded at the border. 
    • Over 100 trucks carrying essential goods and petroleum products on Sunday entered Nepal from India bringing some respite to the country, grappling with shortage of fuel and other commodities .
    • At least 40 people have died in over a month of clashes between police and protesters from the Madhesi and Tharu communities and ethnic minorities. Madhesis are Indian-origin inhabitants of the Terai region bordering India who are opposed to splitting Nepal into seven provinces.

  • Gujarat Government launches special Khadi Utsav in Ahmedabad

    • Coinciding with 146th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Gujarat Government has launched a special Khadi Utsav in Ahmedabad to promote khadi 
    • This special Khadi Utsav seeks to create an aggressive marketing drive in order to promote Khadi in the young generation. It will put " Narendra Modi Kurtas and jackets " as among the main attractions among garments like khadi denim to attract the youth.
    • A special discount of 25 per cent would be given on khadi products manufactured in Gujarat, whuile those from other states will have a 15 per cent rebate.
