  • President gives National Awards to 336 teachers of outstanding merit on Teachers Day.

    - Celebrated on the birthday of the 2nd President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, an eminent scholar.

    - Introduced in 1958, the scheme of National Award to teachers has the objective of enhancing the prestige of teachers and giving public recognition to teachers of outstanding merit.

    - Each award constitutes a certificate of merit, a silver medal and a cash prize of Rs. 25000/-.

  • Indian Railways to install a new fuel saving device called Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in Diesel Locomotives; to save more than 20 lakh per locomotive annually besides less emission of CO2, CO and other pollutants.

    - APU contains a small diesel engine (25HP) coupled to a compressor and alternator for battery charging

    - now main engine (25lt diesel/hr) would shut down if train is idle for more than 10 min (waiting for path or for giving precedence to other trains). Instead APU (3lt/hr) will meet the requirement to provide compressed air for train brake which is supplied by compressor driven by engine and to charge the locomotive battery.

  • RBI relaxes External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) norms- private companies can now use them for general corporate purposes also.
