  • India finishes 5th with 64 medals (15 gold, 30 silver and 19 bronze) at the 20th Commonwealth Games 2014.  
    • Its our third best medal haul after 101 medals (2010) in Delhi and 69 (2002) at Manchester.
  • Acclaimed filmmaker Muzaffar Ali bags the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award 2014 for his outstanding contribution towards the promotion of Communal harmony, peace and goodwill.   
    • It carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 5 lakh. 
    • The prize, now in its 22nd year, is presented on 20th August - the birthday of Rajiv Gandhi.
    • Famous recipients: Mother Teresa, K R Narayanan, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Lata Mangeshkar, Sunil Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Maulana Wahiduddin Khan among others.
    • "Umrao Jaan", “Gaman” and “Khizan” are few of the notable films made by this Padma Shri awardee (in 2005).
  • Jethabhai Patel becomes the new Chairman of nation’s largest milk federation 'GCMMF' (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation).  
    • The 18,000-crore milk federation sells milk products under the ‘Amul’ brand.
  • KV Chowdary succeeds RK Tewari as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest, is honoured with the "Bharat Gaurav" award.   
    • Its the highest honour of merit given by East Bengal football club.
    • The award, instituted in 2011, has famous hockey player 'Leslie Claudius' as the inaugural recipient.
  • CBI arrest SK Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of Syndicate Bank, in a Rs 50 lakh bribery case.  
    • He had allegedly asked for the bribe to extend credit credit limit of some companies.
