    Former Speaker of  West Bengal Hashim Abdul Halim passes away


    CPM veteran and  Former West Bengal Assembly Speaker Hashim Abdul Halim passed away in Kolkata. He was 80. Halim had a record of serving as the Assembly speaker for 29 long years from 1982 to 2011 during the Left Front rule.

    Facts to know about Hashim Abdul Halim :-

    Born :- Halim was born on 5 June 1935

    • Halim started his career as a practising lawyer and later joined Communist Party of India (Marxist).
    • He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal for the first time in 1977 and he served in the assembly for six terms, from 1977 to 2011. 
    • He was the Minister for Judicial Affairs in the Government of West Bengal from 1977 to 1982 and subsequently served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 2011. 
  • ICGS Arinjay commissioned in Kochi


    ICGS Arinjay commissioned in Kochi


    • Aadesh-Class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV) ICGS Arinjay, the 15th vessel of its class in the series of 20 such Fast Patrol Vessels was commissioned in Indian Coast Guard  at Kochi, Kerala.
    • It was commissioned by Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba PVSM, AVSM Flag Officer Commanding-in-chief, Southern Naval Command at a ceremony held Naval Base, Kochi.
    • The Coast Guard ship, built by Cochin Shipyard Limited is 50 metres long, displaces 317 tons of water and has a maximum designed speed of 33 knots. The ship is capable of undertaking multifarious tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation. 
    • Post commissioning, the ship will be based at Okha, under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (NW).

    Role of the Vessel :-

    The primary role of the vessel include fisheries protection and monitoring, patrol within exclusive economic zone (EEZ), coastal patrol, and anti-smuggling, anti piracy and search and rescue operations. The vessels have a secondary role of providing communication link and escorting convoys during hostilities and war time

    Roger Federer beats Rafael Nadal to win Swiss Indoors title


    • Swiss Tennins star Roger Federer won 2015 Swiss Indoors Basel Title of Tennis in men’s single category that was played at Basel. In the final match Roger defeated Rafael Nadal of Spain by 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 score. With this victory Roger Federer ended a three-and-a-half year drought against Rafael Nadal.
    • It was the 17-time Grand Slam winner's sixth title of the season and the 88th of his career. It should be noted that this match was first between Federer and Nadal since Spaniard won their Australian Open semi-final in straight sets in January 2014.

    About Swiss Indoors title :-

    • The Swiss Indoors is a professional men's tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts.Originally an event of the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1970 and 1989.
    • It is currently part of the World Tour 500 Series of the ATP Tour. It is held annually at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, in October, since 1995.
    • Roger Federer holds the record for most singles titles, having won the tournament seven times, in 2006–2008, 2010–2011 and 2014–2015.

    Nico Rosberg wins 2015 Mexican Gand Prix of Formula 1


    Mercedes Formula One team driver Nico Erik Rosberg from Germany won the 2015 Mexican Gand Prix title of Formula One (F1) which was held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. It is Rosberg's fourth win of the season after Spain, Monaco and Australian Grand Prix and overall twelfth championship title of F1 in his career.

    • First Position: Nico Rosberg (Germany) of Mercedes team
    • Second Position: Lewis Hamilton (Britain) of Mercedes team
    • Third Position: Felipe Massa (Brazil) of Williams team

    • Seventh Position: Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) of Force India team
    • Eight Position: Sergio Perez (Mexico) of Force India team
  • Mysuru becomes first visually impaired-friendly railway station  


    Mysuru becomes first visually impaired-friendly railway station


    • To facilitate visually impaired train passengers and make their journey comfortable Indian Railways has unveiled tactile maps of the railway station and train schedules in Braille thus Mysuru railway station has become the country's first visually challenged friendly station in India.
    • Along with tactile maps of station describing the location and distance of entrance, platforms, counters, washrooms etc, schedule of trains, showing their arrival and departure time, have also been made friendly. About 400 metal signages in Braille have been put up along the railings of the staircases leading various platforms.
    • As per the proposed scheme the menu cards at the canteen and food plaza at the station will also be available in Braille.  Anuprayaas, an NGO assisted the railways in make Mysuru railway station blind-friendly.

    • Four years after Punjabi became Canada's third most common language, it has now attained the same status in the country's new Parliament after English and French following the election of 20 Punjabi-speaking candidates to the House of Commans.
    • Of the 20 who speak Punjabi, 18 are Liberals and two are Conservatives. Among the newly-elected Punjabi-speaking MPs, 14 are males and six are females. Ontario elected 12, British Columbia four, Alberta three and one is from Quebec.
    • According to Statistics Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey, 430,705 Canadians identified Punjabi as their mother tongue, making it the third most common language after English and French. The 430,705 native Punjabi speakers make up about 1.3 per cent of Canada’s population. The 20 Punjabi-speaking MPs represent almost six per cent of the House of Commons.
  • RBI allows NRIs to subscribe to National Pension System


    RBI allows NRIs to subscribe to National Pension System


    • To enable Indians living abroad to access old age income security, Reserve Bank of India allowed non-resident Indians (NRIs) to subscribe to the National Pension System (NPS) governed by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority.
    • It has now been decided, in consultation with the Government, to enable National Pension System (NPS) as an investment option for NRIs under FEMA, 1999.
    • Now NRIs may subscribe to the NPS provided such subscriptions are made through normal banking channels and the person is eligible to invest as per the provisions of the PFRDA Act.

    About National Pension System (NPS) :-

    • NPS was launched on January, 1 2004 with the objective of providing retirement income to all the citizens. NPS aims to institute pension reforms and to inculcate the habit of saving for retirement amongst the citizens. 
    • Initially, NPS was introduced for the new Government recruits (except armed forces). With effect from May 1, 2009, NPS has been provided for all citizens of the country, including the unorganised sector workers, on voluntary basis.
