  • Centre to rename the 2nd phase of JNNURM after Vajpayee; to be called AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation). 
    • About Rs 2 lakh crore will be infused to revive the 10-year city-modernisation program which was named after Jawaharlal Nehru by the previous Congress-led government.
    • The first phase of the mission was over last year.
    • The new government will infuse some of the digitization programs to this mission which so far includes scheme on augmentation of water supply, collection and treatment of sewage and garbage, building roads and flyovers among many.

  • China launches 'Visit India Year 2015' in Beijing in presence of the Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who is there on a bilateral visit. 
    • The initiative aims to boost the flow of tourists from China to India and to strengthen the people to people bond. 
    • Both nations had agreed to boost bilateral tourism with such initiative during Chinese President 'Xi Jinping' India visit last September.
    • India will be celebrating 2016 as 'Visit China Year' in turn.

  • Kanagasabapathy Sripavan becomes only the second Tamil to be the Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.  
    • He takes over from the 43rd and first female Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake who has recently been freed from imprisonment by the new government.
    • She was earlier impeached and jailed by the Rajapaksa-led government for not toeing the government line (political vendetta).
    • Suppiah Sharvananda - the first Tamil Chief Justice of Sri Lanka - served between 1984 and 1988.

  • Nicol David - female Malaysian squash player - creates a new world record for the longest reign at the top of ranking
    • She has now been at the number one position for the last 106 months - one more than previous record holder Susan Devoy of New Zealand.
    • It also makes her the first Asian to achieve this milestone.

  • Centre plans to put up 'My LPG' kiosks across major cities in a year. 
    • It will help consumers to access their LPG accounts and check details such as status of booking, subsidy transfer etc.
    • A web portal 'My LPG' has already been launched in Hindi and plan is afoot to include 10 regional languages such as Odiya, Tamil and Gujarati soon.
