  • IIT Guwahati is ranked 87th among the top 100 world universities under 50 years of age.   
    • It is the first and only Indian entry in the list that feature 100 young institutions of learning.
    • It shares the 87th rank with Portugal's New University of Lisbon and Australia's University of Western Sydney.
    • Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology clinched the top spot for the third consecutive year.
    • UK and Australia are the countries with most (14 each) representatives. 
    • The report has been published by London-based Times Higher Education (THE) magazine.
  • 'Beta Pictoris b' becomes the first exoplanet to have its rotation speed successfully measured by astronomers.  
    • A day last only eight-hour here.
    • The alien planet is a gas giant roughly 10 times the size of Jupiter.
    • It orbits Beta Pictoris, a star that's some 63 light-years from Earth and can be seen with the naked eye in the southern sky constellation Pictor.
    • So far we have discovered around 1800 exoplanets.
  • World Health Organisation (WHO) releases a report 'Antimicrobial resistance: global report on surveillance 2014'.     
    • The report provides the status of antibiotic resistance with data from 114 countries.
    • It showed that antibiotic resistance entails serious global threat to public health.  
    • Antibiotic resistance is a stage when bacteria change itself to grow immune to antibiotics.
    • This makes the treatment ineffective and medication result in failure.
    • It causes people to be sick for longer period and increases the risk of death.
  • TRAI recommends charging 8% of yearly revenue on Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) as license fee from internet service providers (ISPs).    
    • The national telecom regulator also wants the same from all holders of broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum. 
    • The plan needs sanction of, first Department of Telecom (DoT) and then Telecom Commission for implementation.
    • The move may push internet rates slowing internet penetration growth in the country.
  • Mark Fields is to succeed Alan Mulally as the CEO of US automaker Ford from July 1.
