  • Trial is underway of the former first lady of the Ivory Coast 'Simone Gbagbo'.  
    • She, the wife of Laurent Gbagbo, is accused of stoking violence in 2010 in the wake of election loss of her husband.
    • Unlike primary accused - Laurent Gbagbo, her husband - she was not handed to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for the trial.
    • A conviction can land her in life imprisonment of upto 20 years.
    • The post-election violence had killed about 3000 people after Gbagbo refused to concede power to his rival Alassane Ouattara - the winner of the polls.
    • He was eventually forced from power in 2011 by rebels and an international military force led by France.

  • Russia creates its own version of EU in 'Eurasian Economic Union' (EEU).  
    • Ex-soviet states like Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan will be part of this Russian-led economic alliance.
    • It aims to remove trade barriers and promote free trade among the member countries.

  • Centre to launch helplines for consumers in all the States.  
    • These Customer Care Centers (Grahak Suvidha Kendra) will function as a one stop center providing a spectrum of services to consumers.
    • The Centers will provide counseling consumers in redressal of their grievances and assist the Consumers in registering their complaints in the appropriate consumer fora. 
    • They can also take up complaints with privatecompanies/manufacturers/service providers on behalf of the Government of India
    • Efforts are on to bring Consumer grievance and helpline mechanism under one common IT platform with a single toll free number across the country.

  • India is currently the 4th largest producer of crude steel in the world as against its 8th position in 2003.  
    • India continues to maintain its lead position as the world’s largest producer of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or Sponge Iron.
    • The steel sector contributes  nearly 2% of the country’s GDP and employs over 6 lakh people.
    • The per capita consumption of total finished steel in the country has risen from 51 kg in 2009-10 to about 60 kg in 2013-14.

  • BJP, for the first time in history, is the largest party in country in terms of number of state legislators (MLA).  
    • It now has 1058 MLA across the country - first ever four figure mark for the party.
    • Congress, with just 949 MLA nationwide, has hit the historical low on this count.

    • It also launched a 24x7 'Incredible India' tourist helpline along with special welcome cards for foreign tourists arriving at 9 International Airports.
