  • India ranks at 143rd position out of 162 countries in the Global Peace Index 2014.   - read more cat
  • Indian Railways have hiked the passenger fare by 14.2% in all classes and freight tariff by 6.5% with effect from June 25.   
    • For passenger fare category, a flat 10% increase has been done in all classes and an additional 4.2% increase was done as per fuel adjustment component linked revision scheme.
    • This fare hike was required in order to make Indian railways financially independent as it is losing Rs 900 crore every month on passenger segment.
  • India overtakes US as the largest importer of Oil from Nigeria in the world.   
    • India now imports about 30% of its total 2.5 million barrels of production per day; as against US purchase of about 250,000 barrels.
    • This is a result of US reducing its dependence on Nigeria's crude oil in recent months.
  • Center to set up an Expert Committee to draft National Policy on Rubber.  
    • It will include representative of various stakeholders of Rubber Sector.
    • It will examine the issues relating to production, development and exports of rubber and related products.
  • India-born Pratishtha Khanna is one of the 10 people to be honoured as 'Champions of Change' by the White House.  
    • The Champions of Change programme of the White House is meant to honour individuals doing extraordinary things to empower and inspire members of their communities.
