  • Provident Fund interest rate hiked to 8.8% for 2015-16

Provident Fund interest rate hiked to 8.8% for 2015-16

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has increased the PF interest rate from 8.75% to 8.8% for 2015-16, while reducing the returns on short-term small savings instruments by 0.25%.

However the hike is an 'interim one' and open for revision as Central Board of Trustees (CBT) will meet again later to discuss the possibility of any further increase in interest rates.

Finance Audit and Investment committee (FAIC) had early recommended 8.95 percent interest on PF deposits for the current fiscal. But it was brought down to 8.8 % due to which trade unions were upset and registered their protest.

Fixing the interest rate solely depends on EPFO's apex decision making body  Central Board of Trustees (CBT) because it provides rate of return from its own income without any assistance from the government.

Earlier, Ministry of Labour and Employment unveiled the Simplified Pension Claim Form 10 D and a single-page Pension Payment Order (PPO). The single-page PPO replaces the current 8-page format and is part of the Centre's efforts to simplify forms and procedures.

    Advantages

    • It will ensure lesser processing time and provide ease of convenience and handling at EPF offices
    • It will also be simpler and comprehensible for members and pensioners
