  • Indian-origin physicist Tejinder Virdee has been awarded with an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to the field of science.  
    • He is one of the founding fathers of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) which ultimately led to the discovery of the Higgs Boson. 
    • He was awarded alongside Oscar winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis, author Hilary Mantel and Stephen Sutton. 
    • Actress Angelina Jolie was made an honorary dame - the female version of a knight. 
    • Jolie, a UN special envoy, received the honour for her work combating sexual violence in war zones.

  • C Radhakrishnan, Malayalam scientist-cum-author, is selected for Moortidevi Award 2013 for his novel Theekkadal Katanhu Thirumadhuram.   
    • The novel is a biography of Thunchat Ramaanujan Ezhuthachan who is considered the father of Malayalam language.
    • He is only the second Malayalam writer after Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri (in 2009)  to win this honour.
    • The award is given in the memory of Moortidevi, the mother of Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, the founder of Bhartiya Jnanpith.
    • It entails cash reward of four lakh rupees, a plaque and a statue of goddess Saraswati.
    • Any living author writing in any of the languages enlisted in the VIIIth Schedule of Indian Constitution including English is eligible for this award.

  • Dwarka Sector 21 station of DMRC is going to become the first metro station in the country with a roof top solar plant.  
    • The plant with a generation capacity of 500 kwp power, is expected to be operational by July.
    • This adds another feather in the already glorified cap of DMRC which is trying to make its stations partially self-reliant in energy.

    • The day raise voices against the abuse and suffering inflicted to our elders.
    • Around 4 to 6% of elderly people have experienced some form of maltreatment at home.
