  • World Health Organisation (WHO) clears the use of experimental drug ZMapp to counter the fast-spreading deadly Ebola virus.   
    • The new drug, tested only on monkeys, has not made it to the standard use on human so far.
    • The rising death-toll has necessitated its premature arrival guided by the philosophy that 'something is better than nothing'.

  • UNHRC appoints 'William Schabas Commission' to inspect the possible war crimes and human rights violations during Gaza conflict.  
    • The 3-member commission will also investigate human rights violations in the Israeli occupied Palestinian territory including Jerusalem.
    • The other two members include Amal Alamuddin (UK) and Doudou Diene of Senegal.

  • Centre appoints former RBI governor Bimal Jalan as the head of the Expenditure Management Commission.   
    • The commission will think up of ways to get maximum output from the government expenditure.
    • It will also suggest how to better manage food, fertiliser and oil subsidies in order to reduce fiscal deficit.
    • The commission is expected to submit its interim report before Budget 2015-16 and the final report before Budget 2016-17.

    • It carries a cash award of Rs. 60,000/- and a ‘Sanad’: given to 15

    Shram Shree/Shram Devi Awardees:

    • It carries a cash award of Rs. 40,000/- and a ‘Sanad’: given to 18

  • The name of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation in Hindi has been changed to "Jal Sansadhan, Nadi Vikas Aur Ganga Sanrakshan Mantralaya".   
    • Earlier it was known as Jal Sansadhan, Nadi Vikas Aur Ganga Jeernodhar Mantralaya.
