  • Moulaye Laghdaf has been reappointed as Mauritania's PM after the ruling party's emphatic victory in elections last year.  
    • He had disbanded his cabinet just a day ago - in a routine step after every parliamentary elections so as to form government afresh.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee launches the National Mission on Libraries.  
    • It will work to modernise and digitally link nearly 9,000 libraries across India to provide readers access to books and information.
    • The project, an initiative of the Ministry of Culture, is worth 1000 crores. 
  • 'World Wetlands Day' has been observed across the globe on February 2nd with the theme Wetlands and agriculture: partners for growth.
  • NALCO unveils its 2nd Wind Power Plant at Ludarva in Jaisalmer (Rajasthan) with a capacity of 47.6 MW.  
    • National Aluminium Company Limited, a Navratna PSU, has its 1st Wind Power Plant at Gandikota in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh with installed capacity of 50.4 MW.
    • The efforts to set up the 3rd such plant is underway in the area of Panchpatmali Bauxite deposit in Koraput.
  • Hollywood actor Philip Seymour Hoffman dies aged 46. The actor famous for portraying character roles had won an Oscar for the best actor in 2006 for the film “Capote”.
  • Meghalaya's 1st Padma Shri awardee 'Silverine Swer' died at 103. She, the oldest voter from Meghalaya, had received the Padma Shri in 1990.
  • Tapas Kumar Sengupta takes over as the new Director (Offshore) of 'Oil and Natural Gas Corporation' (ONGC).
  • World Cancer Day 2014 observed across the world on February 4th.   
    • Its observed to deepen our understanding of this killer disease.
    • This year campaign focuses on Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration that is to reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer with the tagline of "Debunk the myths".
